How I avoid the risks of computer use
Wellness Mama » Blog » Health » How to Avoid the Health Risks of Computers

I use a computer quite a bit… it comes with the blogging territory. I even use computers late at night when I’m supposed to be avoiding blue light and relaxing.

Certainly, modern computers have brought immeasurable benefits, but they also come with their problems (aside from the very real risk of getting sucked into a Facebook and Pinterest black hole!)

The Health Risks of Computer Use

My main concerns with prolonged computer use are:

  • Electromagnetic radiation exposure
  • heat (from laptop)
  • blue light exposure (especially at night)
  • Sitting and posture concerns

I’m a big believer that we shouldn’t shun technology, but we should use it responsibly. It isn’t likely that technology is going away anytime soon so I wanted to find ways to mitigate the problems and reduce the risks of computer use. I’ve found ways to address each of the above risks and I now feel safer about using a computer.

Electromagnetic Radiation Exposure

I used to think that the dangers of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) were overblown until I really started researching it. We are only beginning to uncover the many problems with EMR and what we know so far can be pretty scary. The good news is that there are ways to protect against the harmful affects by limiting the time we spend on these devices, not using them close to our bodies and shielding our bodies from them when possible.

There are several types of radiation emitted from many computers, especially laptops, and they come with different risks.

Types of radiation

One device I use to mitigate these types of radiation with my laptop is called a Defender pad which helps on several of these fronts.

Re-cap of Physics

Because of the nature of energy, radiation is exponentially stronger the closer you are to it. Its strength actually decreases radially as you move away from it. In physics, it follows the inverse-square law. The intensity is proportional to 1/distance squared.

This means, if you are 2 inches away from the source, you experience ¼ the amount of radiation exposure as you would if you were just 1 inch away from it. If you are 4 inches away from it, you now experience 1/8 the amount of radiation you would have if you were just 1 inch away. This is why a lot of cell phone manufacturers recommend you keep your cell phone at least several inches away from your body at all times.

The defender pad puts some distance between my lap and the computer and is shown to block all of the frequencies an heat from the computer:

Defender pad laptop radiation protection

I got my DefenderPad here and use it anytime I’m using my laptop, even if I use it at my desk.

I also use an earthing mat under my arms if I’m sitting at my desk and using a computer as there is some evidence that the grounding effect of an earthing mat can help:

There have been some preliminary studies on the effects of grounding on cortisol levels and inflammation (PDF) and I’m confident that research will continue in this area. What fascinates me most is the testing done in thermographic imaging, which basically shows a heat map of the body. Heat patterns can signal inflammation in the body.

earthing How to Get Healthy While You Sleep

The above thermographic image was taken of a woman who complained of stiffness and chronic pain. The first picture was taken before earthing, and the second, after just 30 minutes of earthing.

I use the Defender pad and an earthing mat for double protection.

Blue Light Exposure

I wrote before about why I avoid blue light at night and how I use special orange sunglasses to accomplish this. From that post:

There is a lot of research showing that blue light after sunset can disrupt circadian rhythm and suppress melatonin production but recent studies are showing that this has even more serious consequences.

Think about it, until the invention of electric light bulbs, people relied on the sun for the majority of their light and used only natural sources like candles, campfires and lanterns after dark (all orange lights). With the dawn of modern electricity, we suddenly had the ability to stay up with lights on for many hours after sunset.

With computers, TVs, tablets and phones, this use has extended even more and these new technologies are especially high in blue light.

Electricity brought many benefits, but it also gave us the ability to mess with our circadian rhythm and our sleep cycles.

Researchers have known for years that shift workers and those who are regularly up late at night are at a higher risk for various cancers but more recent research shows that even recreational exposure to blue light for a few hours at night can have a negative effect.

Some researchers even promote the theory that the disruption of natural circadian rhythm from (blue) light after dark is a big contributing factor to the rise in obesity and chronic disease. (1) There is even evidence linking this disruption of the sleep cycle to higher rates of heart disease, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems. (2)

From Harvard Medical School:

Study after study has linked working the night shift and exposure to light at night to several types of cancer (breast, prostate), diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. It’s not exactly clear why nighttime light exposure seems to be so bad for us. But we do know that exposure to light suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that influences circadian rhythms, and there’s some experimental evidence (it’s very preliminary) that lower melatonin levels might explain the association with cancer.

(3)

Shift workers and those up after 11 PM seem to be especially at risk for the negative effects of blue light, but the research is showing that any of us who are up after dark looking at sources of blue light (TV, computer, etc) are at risk. Since my work day begins when my kids go to bed at 8, avoiding these things was not an option so I looked for another solution.

Since my workday often begins when my children go to bed after dark, I’ve been using orange glasses like these and a free computer program called f.lux to minimize blue light exposure and protect my melatonin levels.

Sitting and Posture

I’ve written before about the dangers of sitting and how it is much worse than we realize, and many people sit while using a computer:

Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death. – Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic

Dr. Levine further explains that sitting not only increases the risk obesity, but also the risk of cancers (like lung, endometrial, breast and prostate), heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and more.

His research and an analysis of many recent studies show that each hour we spend sitting takes about 21 minutes off of our lives (smoking only shaves 11 minutes off of your life. The jury is still out on how many minutes each donut takes away).

Here are some of the reasons why:

  • We burn 50 less calories per hour when sitting (compared to standing)
  • Sitting can cause the muscles to atrophy or tighten in certain places and lead to things like back pain
  • Research is also showing that sitting for long periods causes the muscles to release less of the enzyme Lipase which controls proper breakdown of fats
  • Sitting for long periods can reduce insulin sensitivity and increase risk of insulin resistance
  • Sitting too much for an extended time can reduce bone density

A simple (and free) solution is to just stand when using a computer. I’ve stood at a counter before or placed some boxes on my desk to keep my computer at the right height. I eventually just invested in a stand-up desk to simplify things, but just find a way to stand as much as you’re able.

I personally have this standing desk which I found for under $200 and it has lasted me several years and is still in great shape. I keep it in the corner of a room and it actually takes up less space than a conventional desk. Another unexpected benefit: my little kids can’t reach the top of my standing desk, so it is one of the few safe places in the house I can keep my camera or other delicate equipment.

I’m sure we will continue to find out more about all of these risks of computer use, especially of electromagnetic radiation, but these are the steps I personally take to minimize risk.

How often are you on a computer? What do you do to do you protect yourself?

Thank you! This is causing some arguments between my husband and I. I bought a radiation meter and our master bedroom and family room have the highest readings! The back of our house is by a street with major power lines, those thick cable looking ones. That is the cause of the high number. My husband wants me to show him proof that EMF’s are dangerous. Is there a documentary or book or any studies on the dangers of it? He even bought me a hybrid car and he drives an electric car… I unplug our wifi at night..caused some arguments but now he just doesn’t say anything else anymore… I drive with my cell phone on airplane mode…but I dont’ know how else to minimize expusure in our master bedroom. We cannot move from our house as of now.

Hi Lorena, not sure where you are located.. i have been reading quite a bit about this myself lately and came across Geovital as a website that specialises in offering protection against geopathic shock, emf, radiation at home and they focus majorly on bedrooms as that is the most important place for the body to heal (during sleep). Just do a search on google and it should pop up. I am thinking of getting an assessment for our place too. good luck.

I use a computer all the time and sadly can never do much to protect myself at work, but I do have a question though. Will televisions and game consoles such as a ps4 do the same thing as a computer/ labtop in terms of radiation exposure?

My son will be homeschooled next year…2 of his six courses will be online…a defender shield for his laptop, placed on the table…and blueight glasses…is there anything else I can do to better protect him? Also…can I set the tablet on the defender shield when the laptop is not in use?

I’ve tried similar products…. I haven’t noticed a huge difference from them but am planning to do some testing with and without them and see if cortisol levels change…

Thanks for your response. I’ve got one on my phone, no real scientific data but I did notice a decrease in headaches. Easily could be something else but hey, it is on and no sense in removing!

DR. DEAN IS A LEADING SPECIALIST IN MAGNESIUM AND OTHER PROTOCOLS. THERE IS SO MUCH COMING OUT OF THESE ALTERNATIVE DOCTORS THAT KEEPING UP WITH THEM IS A DAILY EXERCISE. WHY ANYONE IS GOING TO MAINSTREAM DOCTORS IS BEYOND ME WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY CARING AND INFORMED DOCTORS READY TO HELP US WITHOUT THE NEED OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE CALLED BIG PHARMA WHO WANT TO FORCE EVERYONE TO TAKE VACCINATIONS DESPITE THE PROVEN DATA THAT SAY MOST OF THEM ARE TOXIC AND HARMFUL. THERE IS ALWAYS A NATURAL WAY TO DIAGNOSE AND CURE THESE MALADIES AFFLICTING US. MY ONLY WISH NOW IS TO BE ABLE TO GO TO ONE OF THESE IN MY HOME TOWN INSTEAD OF THOSE IMPRISONED IN ALLOPATHIC MEDICINE.

Why don’t we hear more about this on TV? And why hasn’t the industry addresses this problem? I think of all the little kids, pregnant women, who must be effected more intensely than others……Knowing how important magnesium is to the human body is I wonder if this blue light also diminishes magnesium like it does melotonin? I would bet on it!!!! Read the book Magnesium Miricle by Dr. Carolyn Dean and you can see how a lot of these health issues mentioned here would be linked to blue light diminishing magnesium…..Anyone know of any studies being done concerning this?

Hello, I`d like to suggest a solution I have found accidentally for supporting a spine during long hours of sitting. I got a gift from friends, which was meant for balance training (google for “balance cushion”, or “ball cushion”), but I found out in the manual it could be used also for sitting on it (google for all health benefits yourself). Since then, I`ve been using it daily and I have forgot what a back pain or neck pain means. It comes in different forms, you may like it bigger and soft (without pins) if you are going to use it for sitting rather than stepping on with your feet.

Thank you for your article. The defender mat can only block emf’s from the lower surface of the laptop. The emf’s radiate in all directions from the source. … including your hands and wrists that are in direct contact. So why use a defender pad? Thanks Tom

My husband carries his iphone 6 in his pocket all day for his job. I’ve read the radiation poses major health risks when keeping it close to your body. Is there a protective case that you recommend that deflects the radiation? Thank you in advance.

Excellent article Katie! Love f.lux too – just installed it and it makes quite a difference!

I wonder if you’ve used the mobile phone/wi fi harmonizers from Orgone Effects Australia? I got some for my mobiles from a friend and I like that you can tape them to the back of your phone or laptop to reuse with future equipment. I’m just curious if others have used them, as I feel very strongly about all this and want the best protection!

Will look into the earthing pads. I love earthing as a concept – the best cure for jet lag apparently is to earth yourself upon arrival by standing barefoot on the grass 🙂 Makes perfect sense to me!

I also use orgonite and have it sitting next to my wifi modem and in various spots around the house eg next to TV……have also been using flux since they 1st started it and I love it. Got my orgonite from this site…http://orgonia.bigcartel.com/category/wall-plaques. I don’t make calls on my mobile (emergency use only so never on my body..lives in my handbag) otherwise would have it on that as well but should pop it on my cordless phone handsets…

I CALLED RADIANT LIFE AND ASKED THEM IF THE DEFENDER PAD IS EFFECTIVE AGAINST WIFI. SHE SAID YES WHICH IS NOT WHAT A COMMENT ON YOUR SITE WROTE. BEFORE I BOUGHT IT I NEEDED TO KNOW.

    1. Jay Avatar

It is effective against all radiation coming out of the laptop… The Wifi in your home comes out of your wireless router, so unless you want to scrap that for wires going around your house, you are sort of stuck with it while using your computer.

The wireless signal is low intensity unless you are very close to the router. So don’t have it in your bedroom or up on your desk, and turn it off when you sleep. It will save electricity and minimise exposure.

Get the pad if you want it. It will stop intense radiation from the laptop reaching your legs, and lower abdomen which is great protection.

  11. Jamal Avatar

Would turning the laptop on airplane mode stop the harmful radiation it is emitting?
Also doesn’t the defender pad and the earthing mat only block the radiation emitting from the bottom of the laptop, what about the radiation emitting from the computer screen and the keyboard?

  12. Lori Avatar

Thanks so much for writing this post. I have been meaning to look into this more. It is so difficult because all these phones and laptops are key to our modern lives and I really enjoy accessing the information they can provide (like your blog!), communicating with them and working with them. But, you have introduced me to some tools to consider. Nice work.

  13. Jamal Avatar

What if the laptop were to be in airplane mode, would it still emit harmful radiation?
Also doesn’t the earthing mat and the defender pad only protect the bottom of the laptop, what about the harmful radiation coming from the computer screen and the keyboard?

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

As I mentioned above, the concentration of EMR is higher the closer you are to the computer and decreases greatly even an inch away, so the part touching legs would be the most dangerous part. Also, there is heat that comes mostly from the bottom and it comes with its own risks. Airplane mode would decrease it some, but it has a power source so it will still emit some.

  14. Cat Avatar

How about the WI-FI? The microwaves from WI-FI hit you from everywhere-your defender pad doesn’t help unless you use a WIRED connection. First thing to protect against RF exposure is to turn your WI-FI off.

    1. Nancy Russell Avatar
      Nancy Russell

COULD SOMEONE VERIFY THAT THE DEFENDER PAD WILL NOT WORK IF THE LAP TOP IS ON WIRELESS (WIFI)? I TOLD MY KIDS THAT’S WHAT I WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS BUT NOT IF IT WON’T WORK ON MY WIRELESS MACBOOK AIR.

      1. Wim Avatar

The wireless of your router / modem typically radiates in all directions so that you can use it anywhere in the house. To be safe from EMF you need to do a number of different things:
        – Switch to wired telephones. (Dump the Dect or use a modern one that has “eco”dect mode)
        – Hard-wire all equipment that uses Internet and switch off the wireless part of the router/ modem or only switch it on when in use.
        – When the Ethernet cable is installed, switch off the Wireless of your laptop/desktop
        – Check to see if the outlets you use most have earth.
        – Check your laptop power supply for earth.
        – Check all equipment / lights within arms reach of your laptop for wires with earth.

There’s more to it, but this is a good start. WIFI and DECT are the modern day Tobacco and Asbestos .

I am also a blogger (and nutritionist) and I spend a lot of time in front of the computer (as does my husband).

My husband and I use earthing pads when we use our computers. We also use earthing pads in our bed.

We turn the wireless off at night and turn it on again in the morning. We don’t keep any cell phones in the bedroom.

Thank you for your great ideas, Katie. I am looking forward to reading more tips from other readers.
