I love making natural beauty products as gifts, and homemade body butter is one friends and family always love to receive. It’s a gift that is easy to personalize with custom natural scents (and even can help with sleep if you add a little magnesium!).

Put the finished product in a cute glass jar with ribbon and a tag, and you have a thoughtful and beautiful gift that will make them feel pampered for months.

Even if you aren’t typically the type to make your own gifts, this recipe is easy for DIY beginners and fun to make. Give it a try!

Why Body Butter?

Body butter is thicker than lotion and contains less water. This means it takes longer to penetrate the skin (don’t walk on a floor barefoot after applying body butter to your feet!) but it’s very moisturizing and softens even those tougher, very dry spots like the knees, elbows, and feet.

By whipping body butter, you get the best of both worlds since it is soft and easy to apply but still extra moisturizing.

How to Make Body Butter

This new recipe has similar ingredients to these homemade lotion bars, but removes the beeswax and whips the mixture as it cools to create a cloud-like lotion that is extremely nourishing! The shea butter and cocoa butter combine for a luxurious feel, but you can also add mango butter if that’s what you have.

This body butter is great for babies or sensitive skin, and scents can be added to make it a custom gift for anyone (or to keep for yourself!).

My current favorite is a peppermint-scented version for the holidays, but I also like a citrus/lavender combination.

DIY Whipped Body Butter Recipe

The combination of shea and cocoa butter with two nourishing oils makes a highly moisturizing combination, but whipping the mix helps it go on smoothly without being oily.

Materials

Instructions

  • In a double boiler or glass bowl, combine all the ingredients except for the essential oils.
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until all ingredients are melted.
  • Remove from the heat and cool slightly.
  • Stir in the essential oils if using.
  • Place the bowl in the refrigerator and chill for 1 hour or until the mixture is starting to harden around the edges.
  • Use a hand mixer to whip for 10 minutes until fluffy.
  • Return to the fridge for 10-15 minutes to set.
  • Store in a glass jar with a lid and use as you would regular lotion or body butter. If your home is above 75°F, the body butter may soften and need to be kept in the fridge to maintain the whipped texture.
  • Keep for yourself, or give away! Enjoy!

Notes

Cocoa butter, shea butter, and mango butter are all interchangeable in this recipe. If you only have one or two on hand, feel free to substitute or play with different proportions.

Body Butter FAQ

This recipe has been around for a while, so here are some of the questions you’ve asked the most:

Will it be greasy?

Body butter is definitely more emollient and has a heavier texture than lotion does, but after a few minutes it will penetrate the skin and lose any greasy feel.

How long will it last?

Stored away from moisture and light this homemade body butter should last 6-8 months. Using a spoon or spatula to dip rather than your fingers will extend the life of the body butter.

Why is mine not white like yours?

Shea butter especially can vary in texture and color depending on the brand. Not to worry, it will still work just as well!

Will this clog my pores?

Nope! This body butter actually did wonders on my cystic acne back in the day.

I have a questions about the body butter replacing Cocoa butter with mango butter and using lavender essential oils. My friend said she uses it and it feels great afterwards then her skin dries out even more and feels like alligator skin. Has anyone else had this reaction. I whipped it up and love it, but wondered if any of the ingredients could cause drying of the skin after it’s absorbed it?.

I just made this, however, I was not sure how to measure the shea and cocoa butter, they were in solid form and hard so not sure how to measure the 1/2 cup. I went online and all it says is it’s 4 ounces, but I still questioned it, anyway I measured 6 oz of each (just to be on the safe side) and after it cooled in the fridge, even for an extra 1/2 hour, it whipped but didn’t get really stiff as I thought it should, I’m keeping it in the fridge just in case. but would like this problem clarified. since there must be a problem with the conversion of solid to ?
    Thanks Mary

Hi, I was wondering how much this recipe makes? I want to make some as gifts and trying to figure out if I should double the recipe.
    Thanks!

I have a question – why does the shea butter natural aroma overpower everything that I make with it? Am I using a wrong type? It is so strong that even extra essential oils get lost.

Oh and I live in India and purchase my supplies on Amazon. The shea butter is sourced from Africa

Does the Wipped Body Butter have to be store in a glad jar or can it be stored in an aluminum container and if so, would it last the same amount of time

Since I am not in my home county currently I don’t have a hand held mixer. Would a wisk work to mix everything?

Hi! Do you measure the solid oils before or after melting them? Are they liquid or solid when measuring 1/2 cup?

Loved this recipe, but tried a little variation to make it less sticky. Here’s my version of it.

    Body Butter Ingredients
    1/2 cup shea butter
    1/2 cup coconut oil
1 1/2 cup 99% Aloevera gel (I used lily of the desert brand)
1/4 cup light oil (like almond, jojoba, or olive)
10-30 drops of essential oils of choice (I use lavender, jasmine or rose)

    Body Butter Instructions
In a double boiler or glass bowl, combine all ingredients except essential oils and aloe vera gel.
Bring to medium heat and stir constantly until all ingredients are melted.
Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Add essential oils if using.
Move to fridge and let cool another hour or until starting to harden around the edges but still somewhat soft.
    Add aloe vera gel.
Use a hand mixer to whip for 10 minutes until fluffy.

thanks for the recipe! I love it!
but…. it melts very easily. I was wondering if I would add more cocoa butter or shea butter, would it melt less easily? or Is it best to keep it in the fridge at any time?
    thanks!

Can I add honey to this mixture ? Would the honey make it go bad fast ?

    Hi Katie,

Thanks for this recipe! I made it and it is awesome. Made it with three different essential oils for the two kids and myself. I read somewhere that adding a teaspoon on arrowroot flour will help with the extra greasy feeling that comes with body butter. I tried that with my version and it certainly helped!

How much (what volume) does this end up being? I almost just added all the measurements together, but whipping it up would incorporate a fair amount of air, making it larger.

    Thank you,
I made the cream today but added argan oil and castor oil as well as frankinscense and tea tree oils. I have already used it on my 7 year olds eczema. She loved it hope it will help with it. I loved the feeling of it it is hard in room temp but easily melts away with body temperature in UK.
