I love making natural beauty products as gifts, and homemade body butter is one friends and family always love to receive. It’s a gift that is easy to personalize with custom natural scents (and even can help with sleep if you add a little magnesium!).

Put the finished product in a cute glass jar with ribbon and a tag, and you have a thoughtful and beautiful gift that will make them feel pampered for months.

Even if you aren’t typically the type to make your own gifts, this recipe is easy for DIY beginners and fun to make. Give it a try!

Why Body Butter?

Body butter is thicker than lotion and contains less water. This means it takes longer to penetrate the skin (don’t walk on a floor barefoot after applying body butter to your feet!) but it’s very moisturizing and softens even those tougher, very dry spots like the knees, elbows, and feet.

By whipping body butter, you get the best of both worlds since it is soft and easy to apply but still extra moisturizing.

How to Make Body Butter

This new recipe has similar ingredients to these homemade lotion bars, but removes the beeswax and whips the mixture as it cools to create a cloud-like lotion that is extremely nourishing! The shea butter and cocoa butter combine for a luxurious feel, but you can also add mango butter if that’s what you have.

This body butter is great for babies or sensitive skin, and scents can be added to make it a custom gift for anyone (or to keep for yourself!).

My current favorite is a peppermint-scented version for the holidays, but I also like a citrus/lavender combination.

DIY Whipped Body Butter Recipe

The combination of shea and cocoa butter with two nourishing oils makes a highly moisturizing combination, but whipping the mix helps it go on smoothly without being oily.

Materials

Instructions

  • In a double boiler or glass bowl, combine all the ingredients except for the essential oils.
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until all ingredients are melted.
  • Remove from the heat and cool slightly.
  • Stir in the essential oils if using.
  • Place the bowl in the refrigerator and chill for 1 hour or until the mixture is starting to harden around the edges.
  • Use a hand mixer to whip for 10 minutes until fluffy.
  • Return to the fridge for 10-15 minutes to set.
  • Store in a glass jar with a lid and use as you would regular lotion or body butter. If your home is above 75°F, the body butter may soften and need to be kept in the fridge to maintain the whipped texture.
  • Keep for yourself, or give away! Enjoy!

Notes

Cocoa butter, shea butter, and mango butter are all interchangeable in this recipe. If you only have one or two on hand, feel free to substitute or play with different proportions.

Body Butter FAQ

This recipe has been around for a while, so here are some of the questions you’ve asked the most:

Will it be greasy?

Body butter is definitely more emollient and has a heavier texture than lotion does, but after a few minutes it will penetrate the skin and lose any greasy feel.

How long will it last?

Stored away from moisture and light this homemade body butter should last 6-8 months. Using a spoon or spatula to dip rather than your fingers will extend the life of the body butter.

Why is mine not white like yours?

Shea butter especially can vary in texture and color depending on the brand. Not to worry, it will still work just as well!

Will this clog my pores?

Nope! This body butter actually did wonders on my cystic acne back in the day.

Hello! I made a mistake the second time I made this and did not use a double boiler…just used a regular pan to warm, melt and combine. Is this cream still usable or did it lose important properties? Wondering if I need to start over and make again. Thank you!

Hello all, was just wondering if I make the recipe as listed above and use lavender essential oil for fragrance how could I incorporate witch hazel and vitamin E without altering the consistency. I just want the witch hazel and vitamin E for their health benefits and not scent purposes. Would I substitute some of the coconut or almond oil with E and witch hazel? And if so how much of each should I use? Thank you in advance.

Hey there, I’ve been asking a ton of questions on your other recipes, but this is the last one… Hopefully…. Anyways, could i whip this my hand? My baby sis is asleep and I don’t want to make her with the hand mixer. Please reply soon.

Thanks. She woke up before i made it so it was fine. Perfect!!! My mom (who hates being greasy) loved it. I found my Christmas gifts lol. Can you make this without coconut oil? Dad’s allergic.

Hi there! I imagine this might smell pretty good without an essential oil for fragrance. Does it have a scent on its own?

    1. Suzette Avatar

On its own, it will have a slight chocolaty scent from the cocoa butter. I love it, but if you don’t like that scent, you can leave the cocoa butter out and add in more shea or use mango butter in its place. You can also use Essential Oils to cover the scent of the butters. Hope this helps you out some. 🙂

Hi, I was wondering if this would work with a stand mixer, not a hand mixer, and how hard is it to clean off of the mixer itself? What would I use to clean up?

    1. Suzette Avatar

A stand mixer will work fine. To clean, scrape down the blade as best you can then rinse the blade and the empty bowl in very hot water. From there clean with your regular dish detergent (one for cutting grease works great, but really they all do) and you are good to go.

I just made this as my first attempt at body butter. It worked beautifully and I’m SO pleased with myself. Thanks heaps for this recipe.

Hey there! I just tried out this wonderful recipe and it was great. Everything went well, smelt great, was creamy/whippy and was very simple to make. Only problem I had with it was that it is still really oily when i run it into my skin. I tried a new batch using less oil, then a another new batch using even less oil. This is where it gets confusing… each time I used less oil, the end product seemed more oily! Any idea what is going on or how i can get a less oily end result?

I love your blog and I have tried many of your recipes! I absolutely love this body butter! I use 1/4 cup of cocoa butter and 1/4 cup of mango butter (I couldn’t decide) and I don’t use essential oils because I love the smell of the cocoa butter! Thanks for all your efforts! <3

Just s question. My cocoa butter, shea butter, etc. Are chunks in a tub. How do I measure 1/4 cup, I /2 cup, etc…melt then measure, fill a measuring cup with cold water and then add butter until water rises to desired amount? Thanks in advance.

What do I do with the essential oils it never said what to do with them?

  11. Cruz Avatar

Do you use natural preservative, like neem, vitamin E, etc. for longer shelf life. If you do can you give me a formula or tell me how much to add in a mixture of 4 cups of body butter mix?

I have a question for you. I have been using your whipped body butter for awhile now, which I love, but no matter how much I rub it into my skin, I get coconut oil residue in my clothes. Have you had this happen? If so, how do you get it out? Thanks!

Hi there! If I don’t whip these ingredients and just blend them together, will this still work…like a salve? Just curious as I don’t have a mixer and not sure if I’ll be purchasing anytime soon.

    Thanks so much!

Sorry if this has been posted already. I have a mixture that resembles cake batter 24hrs later. I’m not sure where I messed up, I would like to salvage & remedy. Any & all suggestions welcomed

I made this a few months ago for the first time and it turned out really nice. I didn’t have any sophisticated measuring tools. I just followed Wellness Mama’s recipe. I did use an electric beater to whip it. I don’t keep it in the refrigerator and it keeps real nice in a covered jar that I bought at the buck store. I would suggest whipping it in a deep bowl because it splattered all over. As a reply to your question….I would try to whip it up some more with an electric mixer and add a bit of either shea butter or cocoa butter to thicken it. As soon as you scoop some out, it melts in your hands and is easy to massage into the skin. Hope this helps

Yes, that is a very good suggestion! I agree, more Shea butter. So, what I did after posting was place in the refrigerator overnight (yes I know that is a long time). Today the mixture was harder, of course, so I put the electric mixer on it. Overall improvement, texture more like the pictures now. A little on the greasy side at first but it rubs into skin nicely. Still not sure where I went wrong at first ?, but I will definitely try this again. My goal was to replicate or get as close as I can to doTerras Body Butter cream.

Also, I added a little extra shea butter and whipped it up again. It is now sitting in the refrigerator. Do you think the extra shea butter was a mistake, and that I should have added more cocoa butter which is harder, instead? But by now I think I have been touching it too much, and that adding cocoa butter and whipping it again will lead to its shelf life being shortened. Luckily, I made a small batch as a sample, so once I finish it(I’ll just use it on the drier parts of my body, like my feet), I could make another batch with some necessary changes in order for it to be a fluffy, not oily, body butter next time.

Hi Wellness Mama, thank you for this all-natural body butter recipe. However, I have noticed that my body butter has turned out with a rather oil-like consistency. What should I do to make the body butter more like a butter?

I’ve had my mixture in the fridge for almost an hours and it still all liquid. I put a half cup of everything besides the essential oils, and I used olive oil instead of the almond or jaboba. Should I take it out and mix in more of the shea and cocoa butter, or just let it sit in there longer?

    1. Riley Avatar

I actually had to put it in the freezer, let the top layer of it harden (about 15-20 minutes) then heated a spoon in water, dried it, then squished it up. Then i whipped for about 5 minutes but then again i only made half the recipie. With a hand mixer.
