Vitamin C serum is an anti-aging natural skincare ingredient often found in high-end beauty regimens. You can find this antioxidant in many moisturizers, lotions, and creams as well. Why all the fuss? And is it possible to make your own (much less expensive!) vitamin C serum at home?

I’ve researched, experimented, and tried it out and the answer is… yes you can!

Vitamin C Serum Benefits

Vitamin C is touted as an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle cream, and for good reason. Vitamin C is helpful for brightening and tightening skin. (This works if you take it internally too!).

Researchers found that regular use of vitamin C on the skin will:

While I love these benefits, many of these products also cost an arm and a leg. Thankfully, there is a natural, homemade and inexpensive alternative (noticing a trend here?) that seems to work just as well.

How to Make Your Own Vitamin C Serum

In just a few simple steps, you can make your own brightening facial serum.

First, you will need a few items:

Next, just mix in the ratios below and store! Use as you would a facial toner. Note: Since it contains no preservatives, this serum will last about two weeks and needs to be stored in the fridge.

This serum works on most skin types, especially dry or aging skin. Customize your results based on your skin type by:

Cautions & Tips

Here’s the best way to use vitamin C serum, from personal experience:

  • Measure carefully and do not add extra vitamin C as it is acidic and can/will burn the skin if the concentration is too high. If you are dealing with a lot of wrinkles or very dry skin, extra vitamin C can be added, but work up slowly and test on the inner arm before applying it to the face.
  • If you have extra sensitive skin, dilute with even more water.
  • Alternatively, to make the vitamin c less irritating, you can add baking soda to make the serum more alkaline.
  • This is best paired with a natural skincare routine like oil cleansing.

Vitamin C Serum Recipe

Make a simple vitamin C skincare serum at home with just a few simple ingredients.
Prep Time2 minutes
Author: Wellness Mama

Materials

  • ½ tsp vitamin C powder
  • 1 TBSP distilled water (OR 1 tsp distilled water + 2 TBSP vegetable glycerine)

Instructions

  • In a small, dark-colored container, combine the vitamin C powder and the water.
  • If you are only using water and vitamin C, you are done. This will store for up to 2 weeks or longer in the fridge.
  • If you are using glycerin, dissolve the vitamin C in 1 teaspoon of water, then stir in 2 tablespoons of glycerin and store. This version will last a month or longer.

Notes

Personally, I like the pure vitamin C and water recipe as a toner after cleansing. However, glycerin is moisturizing and softening for the skin and will extend the recipe. DO NOT use glycerin on anything that is used in oral care or in the mouth as it is bad for teeth.

Will this serum work for just a moisturizer, without oil cleansing if i use the glycerin version? I think i would fall in the category of oily, acne prone skin. thanks!

CAN YOU CLARIFY SOMETHING FOR ME? I THOUGHT THE VEGETABLE GLYCERIN WOULD DRAW MOISTURE FROM YOUR SKIN IF YOU USE IT WITHOUT SOMETHING TO MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN. IS THAT TRUE?

    Hi Katie,

I originally made the recipe using glycerin because I am 50 and my skin is aging and dry. The only thing I have found is that it stays like of sticky on my skin rather than getting absorbed. I have also tried it with water but I am wondering what you think about combining it with rosehip oil or another anti-aging oil so I can apply it under my makeup. Are there any benefits to this or any reasons why it would be less effective? I really love trying all of your recipies and I LOVE your blog. It’s very addictive 🙂

    Thank you,

    Michelle

If I add the glycerin do I still need to store it in the fridge?

HI! I just tired making this (using the vegetable glycerine) and I couldn’t get the vitamin C to dissolve into the distilled water. Do you have any tips?

    Thanks!

I would love to make this! Do you know if I can add Copiba, Frankincense, and Lavender + jojoba oil to make it a serum?

I made the serum and loved it. However I needed to make a new batch and went to toss the left over and the vitamin c had formed a clump on the bottom. Now it’s stuck. Any advice on how to get this out? It’s such a small bottle so it’s not like I can stick anything in there.

I am using a vitamin c serum for about a month but I do like it. It brightens my skin and it worked quickly, it was subtle but I’m going to continue to use it. I paid maybe $13-14 for it and I think your recipe will do the same. I think the brand I bought is derme hoping to minimize harmful chemicals but the ingredient list is really long?

this probably means you need to try a different vit c powder (there are ultra fine powders available on Amazon) or mix it in water before you add the HA.

Mar! I have been using moistened vitamin c powder as an underarm deodorant -it is the best! Try using your leftover serum this way, or just dilute the serum more so that your skin doesn’t react. (I have had to build up to using a high concentration.)

BTW, I have also tried using moistened zinc oxide powder as an underarm deodorant and it is amazing, too.

Its important to check the ph level with a ph strip and to store the serum in a dark colored airtight dispenser in the fridge. With your formulation its safest to throw it away after every use. Ad vit e and a preservative like Cosgard/Geogard to preserve it a little longer. Desinfect everything with alcohol: Your workplace, the dispenser, tools and your hands.

Help!! Hey Wellness Mama, i made the Serum, i love it but my skin doesn’t ?. Is there any other way i can put this batch i made to good use? Other ways to use it? Thank you!!

Thanks for this! Can I use the water and vitamin c recipe in a small amber glass spray bottle and mist onto my skin?

Great post! I have made my own Hyaluronic Acid serum to add my vitamin c powder to, but have found that the vitamin c does not dissolve well. Any tips for getting it to completely dissolve? I have already mixed quite a bit and am trying to salvage the one dropper bottle I have with the HA/Vit C mix that won’t dissolve.
    Thanks!

Does anyone know if the juices from citrus fruits will work as a substitute for vitamin C?

I’m trying it but I haven’t seen any results yet after 2 weeks of use. I would like a recipe for a serum with Vit C & hyaluronic acid. I have deep wrinkles around my mouth so looking for something to help with those

I’m 42 yrs old, I saw the Somaluxe Rapid Line Filler on the Today show. The Today show did a segment on less expensive products. The Somaluxe product was the substantially less yet comparable option over “La Mer” cream which retails anywhere from $200-400 bucks per jar! Yikes!

I’ve only been using this Somaluxe Rapid Line Filler for about two weeks or so and I agree w/the other reviewers I can already see some lines and wrinkles becoming less noticeable.
