What Are Lotion Bars?

Lotion bars are a very moisturizing body lotion in solid form. They look like a bar of soap but are used on dry skin. My original lotion bars recipe is one of my more popular recipes and I’ve shared several variations of the basic recipe:

An Easier Way

The one complaint I’ve gotten about the lotion bars is that they can be hard to apply and store. After I started making my own deodorant in deodorant containers, I realized that those containers would work wonderfully for lotion bars and solve both problems.

Now, I make lotion bars in deodorant tubes to make them easier to store and use. They are also much easier to give as gifts this way and there are so many ways to customize them.

A Word On Ingredients

For this recipe, I order:

I order in at least 5 pound quantities which makes these ingredients much cheaper, but only about 4 ounces of each is needed for this recipe (I already have coconut oil on hand). If you don’t live close, MRH shipping can be expensive. I’ve found that there are now also good options on Amazon for the ingredients, so for this recipe, I order:

Whatever ingredients you choose, just make sure they are unrefined and organically sourced.

Equipment & Tools Needed for Lotion Bar Sticks

  • A double boiler or a glass mason jar sitting on a wash cloth in the bottom of a small saucepan
  • a plastic or wooden spoon for mixing
  • Plastic deodorant containers  – You can reuse deodorant containers, but some of them are not solid on the bottom and it will leak through so check this before you start. I used these and they worked really well but if I’d seen them, I would have ordered these since they come with cute labels.
  • Paper towels, old newspaper or rags that can be thrown away (to clean out pan/jar- see instructions below recipe)
These lotion bar sticks are an easy way to use lotion bars. Shea butter, beeswax and coconut oil make an incredibly moisturizing combination for all skin types.

Instructions

  • Combine the butters, beeswax pellets, and coconut oil in the top of the double boiler or in a mason jar sitting on a washcloth in a small saucepan.
  • Put about an inch of water in the bottom of the double boiler or in the saucepan and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to simmer and stir the mixture carefully until all the ingredients have melted. NOTE: Be careful not to get any water in to the butters/oil mixture as it will ruin the bars.
  • Once all ingredients have melted, remove them from the heat.
  • Stir in essential oils.
  • Quickly and carefully pour into the plastic deodorant molds. If possible, transfer to the refrigerator to harden or let sit on the counter for 4-6 hours or until completely cooled.

Notes

Important: When finished, do not put the pan or jar directly into the sink or attempt to wash as you would regular dishes. Wipe out the double boiler or pan as much as possible with paper towels, old newspaper, or rags that can be thrown away and then wash in hot soapy water as soon as possible.

How to Use Lotion Bars

Use lotion bars on dry skin only. They are not meant to be used in the bath or shower. Rub a thin layer over skin as often as needed.

These lotion bars are not sunscreen but they do have a natural SPF of about 5 and are great for mild sun exposure.

The tubes make this easy to apply to children or babies.

Prefer to Purchase Pre-Made Lotion Bars?

If you want to use lotion bars but don’t have the time/ingredients to make them yourself, I found a great small business, Made On, that makes all kinds of lotion bars, soaps, natural baby products and hair products that are up to my standards. Their website is HardLotion.com (Note: Affiliate link… the price is discounted for you and I get a small commission to support my blog!)

I love, love, love your stuff. Whenever I find something on Pinterest from your page or a link from another website, I feel confident that your natural products are relevant and easy! I also appreciate that your blogs don’t go on and on…. you tell a cute, quick read and then get to the recipe. I use so many of your recipes (laundry detergent, toothpaste, household cleaners, and now bug repellent lotion). You ROCK IT! Keep up the good work.

Love your website! I’m trying to reduce my plastic, have you seen the paperboard dispensers? I haven’t tried them yet but would love to know what you think ??

I haven’t tried the cardboard dispensers, but I’m sure you could ask a friend who does use store bought deodorant if they can give you the container when they’re finished with it. Two birds with one stone – less plastic and a free container.

Thank you so much for these recipes! I can adapt them to include my CBD oil quite easily, and still get it to fit into the deodorant containers.

I am trying to make a hard Magnesium Lotion Bar for a twist up tube. Knowing that I have to use water in this recipe to melt the magnesium flakes, how much emulsifying wax/stearic acid do I use? I tried my first batch and there is a lot of water at the bottom of my tube.. Help! Any info would be appreciated!

I love your site and have had great success with your skin care product recipes, including the wonderful lotion bars. I did run into a problem today in trying to make the lotion sticks. I was using three 2.2 oz, clear, round containers. Very nice. When I looked at them in the refrigerator as they were cooling, I saw that each had a hole in the top of the lotion of 1/8″. In addition, one of the three containers had approximately 1/4″ of product that had seeped into the very bottom of the container, below the part that pushes the solid product up. Can someone please help me understand what I’ve done wrong? I always do a test run before sharing products with others, and the experiments go on my own counter. 🙂 Thank you!!

Can I just add my favorite lotion brand to this mix or will it be weird?

Good afternoon. What is the measured weight of your bees wax pastilles? I refine my own wax that I get from our friend who keeps bees. So I don’t have it in handy, measurable pastilles but I can weigh out a chunk to match what is called for in the recipe. Thank you!

I’m vegan and because of the way honey bees are treated, I don’t eat honey. Can this recipe be made without the bees wax?

Thank you for all the informative information you post. I’ve made many of your natural products and they work so well that it’s a wonder we ever lost this information from our grandparents.

Thank you and keep cleaning up the planet with your dedicated work,

I would love to make these. I love the scent of vanilla but it isn’t an essential oil so I’m not sure what to use that would have that scent but would be a natural fragrance. Apparently there is a vanilla oil you can get that comes in a small bottle that looks like an essential oil, but I have read that it doesn’t blend well in carrier oils. Do you have any suggestions? P.S. I just made your body butter and LOVE it! Thank you!

Hi …I tried today one of your basic lotion bars nd they are highly moisturising…especially i loved it on my dry hands…but one thing I didn’t add is essential oil …so it doesn’t have a good fragrance…rest it’s very good..thank u for this wonderful recipe?

    Hi
Can I make a rose clay facial solid balm stick and also a Activated Charcol Facial Balm stick ?
Using those Deo Twist Tubes from the Aussie supplier of Bramble Berry Called Aussie Soap Supplies. If made Solid Deoderants and solid lotion bars in them but was wondering if the above is possible just for ease of application so fingers aren’t used much to cause contamination.
    Thx

I make a similar stick that i keep in my freezer and, a couple of times during the day, i rub some over my face. It is very refreshing on a hot day. Love it. I use the Shea butter, vitamin E oil, olive oil, wheat germ oil, coco oil and beeswax all melted and mixed. Works great.

Im assuming cocoa butter n beeswax lasts forever. I got some cocoa butter a yr ago from amazon and it came in hard chunks. Do i grate it and measure the 1/3c (i think thats what the recipe called for)? Or do i melt it and measure it liquified (an awful extra step to do imo)?
Thankfully my beeswax is pastilles, from the Bulk Herb Store.
    Thx!

If you are pouring this hot into plastic will you get nasty chemicals from the plastic container in the lotion?
