Earthing and grounding- how to do it and when not to
Wellness Mama » Blog » Health » Earthing & Grounding: Legit or Hype? (How to & When Not To)

Earthing (also called grounding) can be a controversial topic. Many people report amazing benefits, while critics point out the lack of solid scientific studies supporting this practice.

Let’s delve into the evidence:

What is Earthing or Grounding?

In short, earthing or grounding is putting the body in direct and uninterrupted contact with the earth. This means that skin needs to touch soil, sand, water, or a conductive surface that is in contact with the earth.

From a scientific perspective, the idea is that the earth has a mild negative charge to it. Over time, especially in modern life, our bodies build up a positive charge. Direct contact with the earth can even out this positive charge and return the body to a neutral state.

Many people don’t have this contact with the earth anymore, and some experts wonder if this is a contributor to the (many) rising health problems we face today. As a population, we wear rubber shoes and live indoors. In theory, many of us could go years without directly touching the earth at all, even if we’re outside.

Over time, the theory is that this positive charge builds and can lead to health problems.

Earthing Science 101

If you’re interested in the deeper science, Dr. Briffa gives a more detailed explanation:

During the normal processes of metabolism the body generates what are called ‘reactive oxygen species’ which are commonly referred to as ‘free radicals’. These compounds appear to be important, at least in part because they have the ability to attack and destroy unwanted things within the body including bacteria and viruses. However, too many free radicals are a bad thing, and have been implicated in chronic disease and well as the very process of aging.

Free radicals are involved in the process known as inflammation, which is part of the healing process. However, low-grade inflammation throughout the body may lead to pain and other problems in the muscles and joints, and is also believed to be a key driving factor in many chronic diseases including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. In short, we want free radicals, but not too many.

Free radicals lack sparks of energy known as ‘electrons’. One way to quell them is to give them electrons, and these can be supplied by nutrients such as vitamins A, C and E, and plant substances known as ‘polyphenols’ (found in, among other things, tea, coffee, cocoa and apples). However, substances we eat and drink are not the only way to get electrons into the body: earthing does this too. If the body has a positive charge on it, earthing allows electrons to flow into the body where, in theory, they can neutralize overblown free radical and inflammatory damage.

Carrying a positive charge may well affect the body in lots of different ways, which means that earthing may offer a range of wellbeing benefits.

Benefits of Earthing & Grounding

According to emerging research, earthing may be beneficial in:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Reducing chronic pain
  • Improving Sleep (I can vouch strongly for this!)
  • Increasing Energy (I noticed this also)
  • Lowering stress and promoting calmness by reducing stress hormones.
  • Normalizing biological rhythms including circadian rhythm
  • Normalizing blood pressure and blood flow
  • Relieving muscle tension and headache (I noticed this)
  • Improving menstrual and female hormone symptoms
  • Speeds healing- used in some places to prevent bed sores
  • Reducing jet lag
  • Protecting the body from effects of EMFs
  • Shortening recovery time from injury or athletic activity
  • Reducing  snoring
  • Helping  support adrenal health

Scientific Evidence for Earthing

This is where the controversy begins. Critics claim that there isn’t any evidence to back up this practice and that it could even be dangerous. Proponents cite anecdotal evidence and a few small studies.

So who is right?

There actually are a couple of small scale studies that looked at the affects of earthing or grounding. One study examined 60 people with chronic pain and sleep troubles. Half of the participants slept on a grounded sheet to simulate earthing. The other half slept on a placebo sheet.

The participants who slept grounded reported reduction in chronic pain, respiratory problems, arthritis, apnea and hypertension while the control group did not.

Another much smaller study found (PDF) that earthing reduced blood viscosity, which is a risk factor in heart disease.

There have also been some preliminary studies on the effects of grounding on cortisol levels and inflammation (PDF) and I’m confident that research will continue in this area.

Grounding and Inflammation

What fascinates me most is the testing done in thermographic imaging, which basically shows a heat map of the body. Heat patterns can signal inflammation in the body.

How to Get Healthy While You Sleep

This thermographic image was taken of a woman who complained of stiffness and chronic pain. The first picture was taken before earthing, and the second, after just 30 minutes of earthing.

Unfortunately, all of the studies on earthing are relatively small and poorly run. Hopefully future research will shed some light on the effectiveness (or not) of earthing, but for now, the strongest evidence seems to be anecdotal.

The possibility of grounding or earthing resolving inflammation is exciting, as many chronic diseases cause and stem from inflammation in the body.

My Experience with Earthing

I first encountered the idea of “Grounding” or “Earthing” when I read the book Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever.

The idea that we are meant to connect with the earth regularly made sense. At the same time, I was skeptical that something so simple would be effective. I ran the idea by some electrical engineer friends and a friend who has done research in the biomedical field and they confirmed that there could be a beneficial effect to the body.

Have you ever noticed that you sleep better on a beach vacation after walking in the sand or being in the ocean? One theory for that: the sand and ocean water are both naturally conductive materials and both help ground the body and remove excess positive electrons.

To test the theory personally, I decided to make an effort to ground myself outside often and even use an earthing sheet while sleeping.

I was certainly skeptical at first but figured I had nothing to lose by trying to electrically ground myself. I made a point to walk barefoot outside each day and purchased an earthing sheet to use while I was sleeping, as this is the body’s peak repair time.

My Grounding Results

To my surprise, I noticed the first night I used the earthing mat that I fell asleep much easier and had no trouble falling back asleep after waking up to nurse the baby. Of course, one night of results could have easily been placebo.

After sleeping great for about a month, one night I was tossing and turning and couldn’t fall asleep for a couple of hours. The next morning, I realized that the earthing sheet had disconnected!

Blood tests confirmed that my cortisol levels also improved over a period of six months while using an earthing sheet and making an effort to spend time outside barefoot.

From what I’ve read, reactions to earthing/grounding can vary drastically. Some people will notice a difference immediately while others take a few days or weeks. Others won’t feel any changes but measures of cortisol levels will show improvement. In general, it seems that the more inflammation one has, the more of a difference may be noticed from grounding.

I’m not the only one…

Many on the Tour de France, supposedly including Lance Armstrong used an earthing recovery bag to speed recovery and increase sleep quality while on this endurance race. Various Olympic swimmers, runners, and triathletes have reported using Earthing and various professional athletes have used Earthing methods as well.

Well known doctor and natural health proponent Dr. Mercola has reportedly been using an earthing mat for years and even Dr. Oz has gotten on board recently!

How to Try Grounding/Earthing

Obviously, walking outside barefoot is the easiest and cheapest way to ground yourself or practice earthing. If you are close to an ocean or swimmable natural body of water, this is another great way.

To work, the skin must be in direct contact with rock, dirt or water. The beach/ocean is possibly the best place as not only are sand and salt water extremely conductive, but salt water is also very high in magnesium. Perhaps this is why many people seem to sleep better on vacation at the beach!

Earthing Indoors

Those who can’t or don’t want to spend time outdoors can accomplish some of the same results indoors. There are various products to make indoor grounding easy:

  • An earthing mat can be used under your arms or feet while on a computer to reduce the amount of EMFs you are exposed to. It is also easy to bring when traveling.
  • A half size earthing sheet can be used on any bed size.

Personally, I try to use an earthing mat while on my computer (it is under my desk) and an earthing sheet on our bed. I’ve definitely noticed positive changes since beginning this routine.

The Basic Concept of Earthing Is This:

The grounding mat (or sheet) is an amazing invention that allows you to do earthing while you’re inside a building. It just plugs in to the grounding wire port of a normal 3-prong outlet or a grounding rod (US and Canada only). The earth’s natural electrons flow right up through the ground wire and onto the mat, even if you’re in a high rise. The mat comes with an outlet tester you plug in to see if the outlet is configured correctly.

When NOT To try Earthing/Grounding

I recently talked to EMF expert Dr. Libby Darnell of. Revived Living about EMFs and grounding. You can listen to her interview on the podcast here, but she explained one serious caution about earthing that many people don’t consider: ground current.

Basically she explained that if there is a strong ground current it is actually possible that attempting to ground or earth oneself could be problematic and create more problems. In theory, this is most problematic in really large cities and over wires run in the ground. Her podcast episode will talk about how to test for this in your area.

Earthing: Bottom Line

Like I said, this is a controversial topic with a lot of additional research still needed. That said, in most cases (when there isn’t a strong ground current), it is free to go outside and spend some time barefoot. Spending time barefoot has many benefits, so there isn’t really a downside.

It is also relatively simple to try earthing and track results to see if it helps:

  1. Spend a lot of time in contact with the earth or using something like an grounding sheet
  2. Use a sleep app to track sleep patterns and see if sleep improves with earthing
  3. Also keep track of things like joint pain, headaches, etc and see if those improve over time with earthing

I was introduced to grounding by my chiropractor. I have fibromyalgia and had a car accident over 20 years ago which has caused me to have problems with my neck . I have had pain throughout my body for many years. I am always researching ways to alleviate the pain.I have tried adding and eliminating things to my diet with some success. My sleeping pattern was atrocious .I have been working with my Doctors to figure out a way to get some decent sleep[of course I ultimately ended up w a sleeping pill] I was unable to fall asleep no matter how exhausted I was. When I did finally drift off [at around 3 am!!] I would awake within 2 hours for no apparent reason.I was a mess all day long. My appetite was crazy because I was so sleep deprived. Ok…now the good news…I have been grounded for a month. My fibromyalgia pain has been significantly reduced.I am tired when i go to bed and I fall asleep within 1/2 of an hour [huge for me!].. I am dreaming a lot and the dreams are super vivid which means that I’m getting to the REM stage of sleep[the deepest most restful sleep stage].I have not taken my sleep aid at all in around 2 weeks. I do believe that their is scientific evidence to support earthing/grounding…Is their also a placebo affect ? maybe… either way …I feel great.I bought the 1/2 sheet since I cannot get naturally grounded all the time[i live in New England].to the skeptics…. I have nothing to gain from spreading the word about earthing. My chiropractor has nothing to gain by passing this on to me…he may even lose business !

If you want to ground yourself, you don’t need an “earthing mat”. You can just grab a hold of any copper or steel water pipe in the house. They are essentially at nearly the same potential as Earth itself. Ask yourself how does electrical current return back to earth from our electrical power distribution panel (the electrical panel in the basement, for example) in our homes? Through the grounding rod driven into the Earth outside your home. (that’s why it is required by the National Electrical Code). Think about that for a while. Straight forward freshman year University Physics.

Secondly, to Chantal: as stated above the water pipes ARE ALREADY at ground (Earth) potential. Thus the radiators ARE ALREADY at ground potential as well, because they are connected to the water pipes. You need only touch them. You don’t need to buy a earthing mat as it is a waste of money. Save your money and meditate grasping a copper wire attached to the radiator, for a few cents. IT DOES THE SAME THING!

One thing further I SECOND Gabriel comment above (November 21, 2014 at 12:47 PM)
“There is no such thing as a positive electron. And if there were, it would have nothing whatsoever to do with free radicals. Nothing you do affects the number of electrons in your body. The static charge you may build up exists only on the surface, just like electricity flows only over the surface of any conductor, not through it.
Furthermore, you are far better electrically connected to ground every single time you take a bath or shower or touch a tap or radiator than you are when walking barefoot.
Many people who work with electronics wear grounding bracelets all day. Unlike merely taking off your shoes, these bracelets are wired to ground properly. These people experience no health benefits from this whatsoever.
You don’t need a false reason to go barefoot. Do it because it’s more comfortable, and teaches you to stop striking the ground with your heel.”

Some of the other comments and parts of her (that is: Katie – Wellness Mama) article are just plain ridiculous if one has any substantial background in science or engineering. My degree is in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in Chemistry.

Hi, fascinating thread. I have a question and maybe some you, especially the ones who have some scientific background.
We live in an old house in the Netherlands. We have no grounded sockets on the two top floors. My daughters’ bedrooms are on the street side with no possibility of a grounding pin. We do, however, have metal radiators (water heating system). Could we connect the earthing mats to the radiator with copper wire? would that work?
    Chthonic you for your response!

    Cheers,

    Chantal

Has anyone used the orange earthing hand/foot bands? I was given them as a gift but I’m scared to use them. Are there any side effects?

    1. Angela Avatar

My husband and I have them. They don’t seem to work. He has high blood pressure and chronic back pain and nothing had changed after a year of use. I too am developing high blood pressure. I’m so disappointed.

  5. Lisa Avatar

I purchased earthing mats over a year ago. I can’t attest to anything dramatic that changed, however I do believe there is something to our bodies “connecting” to the earth. I believe God created the earth filling it with activity, energy…… I recall reading a non-published trial that a cardiologist did within his own home with a casual gathering of friends, using before earthing and after earthing blood samples. The results showed that the platelets were less “sticky” after going barefoot. I certainly know how I feel………I know my own body……..and I plan to continue with everything that I do to complement my health regardless of whether it is scientifically proven or not.

  6. Hollie Avatar

are these similar to the pendants you can wear to protect against emf’s? I have tried two different ones and also a home device which is supposed to protect you…I am pretty sure they use the term grounding, say it is supposed to put you back in balance with the earth’s natural magnetic properties. The only problem with them is that they all made me feel terrible. All the symptoms I have increased significantly…the head he’s, the pain, the dizziness. If it doesn’t bother me to lay on the ground outside, then why would this cause me to feel worse. I’m glad it helps people, but it can’t possibly be the same as Walking on the beach or playing in the ocean.

Kind of makes sense, all mammal evolution has occurred while being in touch with Earth.
It’s the most ironic thing I’ve ever encountered when it comes to “right under our nose”.
This can make billions of lives healthier and happier overnight.

    Peace ;]

You need to check out vibesup.com they have earthing mats that do not need to be recharged nor do they need batteries. They use infared technology, crushed minerals and essential oils. Just found this site the other day and have ordered one! My earthing sheet stopped working within 6 months of purchasing it. Too expensive to keep replacing, so I though I would try this new technology.

  9. Alisa Avatar

    Great concept and fascinating results!

But I think we all go to extremes to avoid EMF’s and elevated gausmeter readings – i.e unplugging electric blankets at the wall, etc.

How is it that plugging in grounding sheets wouldn’t also pass on EMFs to the user?
Wouldn’t benefit of grounding/earthing be outweighed by electro magnetic field impact when using electrical sheets?

    1. Ally Avatar

I’ve thought about this too — does anyone have an answer? I’m curious whether the benefits here outweigh the potential for being exposed to additional EMFs…. Thanks!

      1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

They aren’t actually electrical sheets at all. They just have one prong and it just plugs in to the “grounding” port of the plug so you are borrowing the grounding charge from that outlet. They actually come with a rod that you can use and plug into the ground outside as well.

The Bible in Genesis 1 says that God created the heavens and the earth and the dry land He called earth and it was good. So much for evolution. Creation makes so much more sense.

Sue, my comment has disappeared twice. Trying one more time. You are right. Nothing here violates God’s word or truth….even if some of the science seems contradictory, the same technology is being used to protect electronic equipment, so there’s something to it. We know that observational science only works because of the unchanging and faithful characteristics of God. If it all was ‘random’, we couldn’t even communicate using words like this, let alone do science or observe repeatable phenomenon. We can pray and experiment within the bounds of God’s word and make rational decisions and right choices, and we can learn from the wrong ones & trust God to rightly judge the charlatans….hopefully in this life, for we know that later judgment is far worse. Keep seeking truth, the God and Holy Spirit of Truth will never contradict truth or the word of God, and the censoring & lack of men giving God glory only further confirms the word of God.

This article is great; however, electrons are negatively charged, always negative. Protons are positively charged, always positive. This article says “Positive electrons” and should not. You may be referring to Ions, which can become positive or negative depending on the ratio of Electrons and Protons.

My child who is on the Autism Spectrum has insisted for years that he must walk outside barefoot to help him calm down after too much sensory input. He hates putting on shoes as he says that it isn’t the same. Do you think it is the Earthing that is helping him too and has anyone found this to help others who are on the Autism Spectrum. I am intrigued that he found his own solution without knowing anything about this. I will take it more seriously now!

I work for a wholesale distributor of grounding products, called Ground Therapy. While there is no formal study on grounding and the autism spectrum, we have done a lot of work with folks in this community and I can happily share that the responses are TREMENDOUS. Highly highly recommend grounding for those on the spectrum, and anyone in the disability community.

Hi all I have been using a half-sheet for over a year now. Some points: insects don’t like either the current or the silver, bed bugs will not go on to the sheet and those that do go on die.
      Pain: I endured a rotator-cuff operation(shoulder joint) and had a hernia op..my doctor is/was surprised by the speed I healed..anecdotal tho’.
I can’t really measure the difference but when it comes to sleep this can not be.beaten YOU have to suck it and see.
What us so called modern and advanced humans have forgotten is our connection to our MOTHER our sustainer.
Look into this fact: This is what made me jump onto a grounding sheet. Its the chronic health conditions that the modern human suffers from. But go into the jungle go to remote tribes and we see the people As backwards and barefooted but they don’t have No chronic conditions that we do. They are still in contact with nature and of course you can’t forget the food water and air..ours poison us on top. Also sleeping on a earthing sheet for 6-7 hours is better than a 30min walk in the surf or even a couple of hours barefoot in the park and also the body does many things to repair renew and rest at night so you can’t beat sleeping on a grounded sheet. If you have any chronic conditions you must try this age old human knowledge.. Just try it.
Also please please please be aware YOU MUST NOT USE A GROUNDING SHEET IF YOU HAVE A HEART PACEMAKER OF ANY KIND. That said the only other issues are with drugs that affect effect hormone’s. This is because earthing effects the endocrine system so you would need your doctors to monitor your dosage as you will start to need less drugs.
