4 Natural Beauty Tips

Natural Beauty IngredientsCosmetics and beauty products are a major source of chemical exposure for most people. An average beauty product contains dozens of harmful chemicals, many which have not even been tested for safety in humans. Fortunately, there are natural alternatives every beauty product, and most work better than the chemical laden alternative.

A few quick beauty tips and recipes for the week:

  • For a quick and natural facial, give yourself a honey mask. Take a warm shower, or hold your face over a bowl of steaming water to open pores. Rub warm honey on face and sit for 20-30 minutes, Rinse with warm water and splash with cool water to close pores. Honey also works great as a gentle face wash that can be used every day.
  • Instantly clarify and remove oils from your hair by mixing 1 part white vinegar with 5 parts distilled water and pouring over hair after conditioning. Add 5-10 drops of favorite essential oil to make a fresh smell. I recommend lavender, lemon, orange, or peppermint. Depending on your hair type, you may also benefit from detoxing your hair with healing clays and using a natural shampoo.
  • For an intensive hair conditioner, blend avocado and coconut milk or cream in a blender and apply to dry hair. Leave on up to 30 minutes and rinse.
  • For oily hair, massage baking soda into hair, shampoo as normal and rinse. This can be drying for some people and irritating to the scalp. If you want a gentler option, also try DIY dry shampoo for dark or light hair.

  1. What do you think I could use to try and prevent that awful winter static hair?

    • Yeah!! Ok, I know this is like a 2 YEAR OLD POST I’m responding to, but winter static hair is a HUGE problem. What can I do??

      • It depends on why you are having the static issue. If your hair is super dry, try putting a little coconut oil on your hands and then running them through your hair.

  2. Hi Katie, I’ve been a dedicated reader for some time now, and my transition into clean living has been actually great. I do have a question. I never had particularly horrible acne in the past, but I had some. Now that I’ve made changes for the better my acne is worse than ever before. I don’t really understand and it’s very discouraging, honestly.
I have been grain-free, soy-free, and refined sugar-free for about two months now, I drink enough water, I consume organic produce, grass fed meat/butter/raw cheese sometimes, lots of pastured eggs, i take fermented cod liver oil/butter oil blend, great lakes gelatin in red raspberry leaf tea, and grass fed desiccated liver capsules daily, i drink kombucha/eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi…
I haven’t used chemical products on my skin for a couple years now. i wash with raw honey or oil cleanse, tone with organic witch hazel, and moisturize with serums i throw together depending on mood, usually a jojoba base… i just don’t really know! I wonder if I have fat malabsorption? or my body is still detoxing?

I don’t really know who to ask about this…I realize this may be a reach

    • Hm. You could have a hormone imbalance… I doubt that it is a detox reaction. It has been a while for that to be happening. You could also be having a reaction to the cleanser you are using.

    • Hi Ashley,

It could be the Great Lakes gelatin. My skin never breaks out yet every time I have taken the Great Lakes gelatin or collagen I have a major breakout the next day. I have tested this several times & the reaction is always the time. It’s a real shame as I had purchased multiple cannisters of each product. Not sure why this is happening.

  3. I love the recipe on here for homemade laundry soap. If you have a stubborn stain use dawn dishwashing liquid first. Pour directly onto the stain let it set and then cold water soak for an hour or so. Works every time even on blood, grease and set in stains.

  4. what do you use for conditioner? do you make it?

  5. Hi Katie,
I just noticed that in the third tip you said “avocado and coconut milk”…. did you mean avocado oil and coconut milk?

    • Nope- fresh avocado and coconut milk 🙂
