Sweet & Salty Chocolate-Covered Bacon

Chocolate and bacon are two foods that most of us typically eat at completely different times of day. I had never thought of combining them until a reader mentioned eating it at a cooking school.

It sounded like a fun experiment to do with the kids (they are used to my crazy concoctions), and it was surprisingly REALLY good!

At first, our taste buds were confused. Was it sweet? Salty? Then came the second bite, and we were sold. From now on, forget healthy versions of pie or cake for birthdays. It will be chocolate-covered bacon around here!

How to Make Chocolate-Covered Bacon

This is certainly not an everyday recipe, but it makes an excellent and unusual treat for special occasions.

Making chocolate-covered bacon couldn’t be easier. Just cook the bacon and set it aside to cool. Next, melt the chocolate in a double boiler. If the chocolate is too thick for easy dipping, stir in a tablespoon or two of the bacon drippings to thin it out.

Then dip the bacon in the chocolate one piece at a time, shaking it a little to let the excess chocolate drip off. The technique that worked best for me was to hold onto one end of the bacon and use a spoon to scoop the chocolate over the bacon.

I used these semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe. I liked the combination of slightly sweet with the saltiness of the bacon. Feel free to use whatever chocolate you like though (or even homemade chocolate).

You could even make smaller, appetizer-sized chocolate-covered bacon. Just cut the cooked bacon strips into quarters before dipping in chocolate.

If you want to fancy your bacon up a little you can sprinkle it with chopped pistachios or drizzle it with a little melted cocoa butter. (Check out the photos in this article for more decorating inspiration.) Let it cool to set the chocolate and that’s all there is to it!

I know it sounds a little bizarre, but give it a try. It may just become a new favorite!

Chocolate-Covered Bacon Recipe

  • Cook the bacon and set aside on a paper towel lined plate.
  • Melt the chocolate in a double boiler, stirring occasionally until melted.
  • If the chocolate seems to be too thick for easy dipping, stir in 1 tablespoon of coconut oil or bacon drippings to thin it out.
  • Hold onto one end of a strip of bacon and coat in chocolate, using a spoon to scoop the chocolate over the bacon if necessary.
  • Gently shake the bacon to allow the excess chocolate to drip off.
  • Place the chocolate covered bacon on a wax paper lined baking sheet and repeat until all the bacon strips are dipped.
  • Drizzle with melted cocoa butter or sprinkle with chopped pistachios if desired.
  • Put in the refrigerator until the chocolate hardens and enjoy.

    Hi wellness mama! I’ve read, as I’m sure others have, conflicting information on bacon. I always thought that if it was uncured with no nitrates or other chemicals it was okay to eat. However I just read an article that says it’s more so the process the bacon undergoes (as well as other processed meats) that cause cancer.
    Do you agree? Or have studies that show otherwise? I’d love to hear—-we eat a lot of bacon in my home.

    Does this chocolate have any sweetener in it? I just got my first bag of 99% Cacoa. Not sweet and I”ve been eating each nub with a drop of stevia, but how would this taste on bacon without sweetener?

      Try lily’s chocolate chips, they’re sweetened with stevia and really yum!

    A coworker of mine had made this. The only difference is that she left the bacon whole and threaded it on a wooden skewer. It was delicious! It kind of reminded of when you have chocolate chip pancakes and bacon when you put a bite of both in your mouth at the same time.

    No offense Katie, and everyone else that liked this, but that sounds REALLY BAD!!! I have never tried this recipe, though.

      I’ve never tried it either, but was just taking a nap when I dreamed of it, & it sounds so good to me! I had to look it up to see if I was nuts. Will try this one soon, but it seems like crispy bacon would be better. Btw, p-but butter & dill pickles sounds bizarre & awful too, but it’s a match made in heaven! I grew up on PB&P sammiches, & everyone I told about it said ‘Ewww’ but loved it when they finally tried it. You just never know!!!

    I’ve also heard of pop corn with chocolate and bacon and pop corn with caramel and bacon
    Any recipe that uses sweet and salty – the bacon can be used instead if the salt

    I made chocolate dipped bacon (albeit turkey bacon) and brought it to a party and my friends loved me for it! There was only one piece left when the party was over! Will definitely make again!

    So delicious. And I love that your recipe says, “melt in a double boiler or microwave (if you have one).” We don’t & people usually think we’re crazy, but we prefer to cook our food, not kill it! =) Thanks for normalizing it

    How long does this keep for? Not that I expect it to last long, I was just thinking it might be a good alternative to Christmas cookies and to give as a gift.

      Honestly, it hasn’t lasted longer than a day in our house because it gets eaten… but it should last for several in the fridge…

    I ate avocado chocolate pudding. Mash or put in blender 1/2 avocado, scant 1/4 tsp. vanilla, 1 tsp. xylitol, 4 drops liquid stevia, and 1 tablespoon cocoa powder. Sprinkle lightly with Celtic salt when served. Delicious!

    A treat I like to have sometimes is PB&JB’S. I make them in place of peanut butter and jam on crackers. I slice a 1/2 a bananna, put some peanut butter on top of a slice of banana, and then put some friut spread on top of that.  I eat them with a toothpick and I think they’re so fun that I don’t even miss the cracker! I know It’s not too super weird but I was so excited to find a way to replace the cracker.

    Not the healthiest foods, but my all time favourite “weird” combo is refried beans mixed in with goat cheese and warmed up. It’s heaven! But, that’s only for special occasions :}

    Can’t believe I’m reading this on Wellness Mama!  My mom loves chocolate and bacon, and even made us all some chocolate-bacon bark for Christmas last year (it turned out okay,  not phenomenal. 

    So when I saw a gorgeous chocolate-covered bacon photo on Pinterest I knew I had to make some for my mom for her birthday, which was last weekend.  I was really surprised at how good it was (It was so hot where I live that we just ate it straight from the freezer.  Yum!)

    OMG.  Have you tried the vosges chocolate bacon bar?  Ridiculously expensive but crazy good…  They sell it at whole foods.

      It does, unless it is baking chocolate, but if you use really dark (80% or higher), you can eat it occasionally and still keep overall carbs low.
