Pumpkin Spice Room Spray-Natural Air Freshener

I have a confession to make… I wasn’t always a fan of the pumpkin spice craze that would hit when Fall rolled around. Your tastes really must change as you get older, because now it’s not uncommon to find me eating pumpkin pie (unsweetened) while sipping a pumpkin spice latte!

Of course, pumpkin spice candles are also everywhere this time of year, but for health reasons I skip the ones at the store and stick to unscented beeswax. I still wanted that pumpkin scent wafting through the air though (so I could at least pretend there was pie), so I started researching how to make my own room freshening pumpkin spice spray.

A natural one of course!

Room Freshening Pumpkin Spice Spray

Scented candles used to be my favorite. After I learned all of the potential problems with most candles, I wanted to find a more natural alternative for making my home smell like Fall.

This simple room spray is my solution. I’ve made many homemade air fresheners with the same recipe but this is by far the best one for Fall. It uses essential oils and smells crisp, spicy, and sweet. These same oils can be used in a diffuser for a longer-lasting air freshener as well.

Feel free to experiment with the ratios in this recipe, but to me this is the perfect balance. Notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, orange, and even cardamom in the air… it might make you crave apple cider or some pumpkin muffins to go with it…

No special instructions needed, just mix and enjoy your fresh, sweet, and spicy smelling home!

Hi 🙂 I love this post and recipe! My question is this…how long does the scent hang around? I have made my own and it generally lasts about 20 minutes or so. Is that the norm? It’s been years since I have bought chemical laden freshener sand cannot remember :/

…I wonder why mines not :/ I am using vodka in mine. I wonder if I should try alcohol and see if that makes it last longer. What do you use yourself dear?

I know this is a post from last year, but maybe you will still answer. Are all of these essential oils safe to use around kids under the age of five. I know you have kids just don’t know how old, and haven’t found all the ingredient’s safety information in my internet searches. Thank you!

I felt comfortable using them in this dilution around my children, but check with a certified aromatherapist or reduce the amounts if you are concerned… Thanks for reading 🙂

I hate the lingering smell of cooking onions in my house and hate artificial room sprays even more. With this help remove the odors?

      1. Leah Avatar

Do you think I could add apple cider vinegar, witch hazel, or vodka or something like that to get rid of the odors as well?

I only have the starter kit. Are there any blends that would work from that kit?

I love this idea! I have been using pumpkin in everything lately. I wonder if I could blend them and put them in my diffuser? Do you think it would be too strong?

I just made this. It smells amazing! I didn’t have any cardamom oil but I have some ordered so I can’t wait to see what it adds to the scent. Smells like Thanksgiving in my house right now. We thank you kind lady! 🙂

Whenever I make spray like this I add a bit of alcohol. I read it in a health and wellness book once and it keeps the smell longer plus helps the oils mix better in the water. I just use vodka. It has disinfecting properties too!

Just made this and it is awesome! It smells soooo good. I can tell I will be keeping a steady supply of this in the house and I may make some as a host gift for Thanksgiving 🙂

The essential oils you used really do have that “fall” flavor. Good idea. These same oils in an oil diffuser would also be heavenly.

  11. RoAnna Avatar

I wonder if you could use a diffuser, of course maybe only one drop of each oil? Mmmmmm
    my house would smell yummy!

That is brilliant Wellness Mama! I love pumpkin spice – I love to eat, and to smell it. I was a little bummed out too when I gave up scented candles, but quickly realized how much better REAL essential oils are. I can’t stand to smell synthetic fragrances at all anymore, they literally make me feel sick.

I use lots of essential oils and herbs in my home. I make a room spray that smells like chai tea, which I love, but I think I’ll be changing things up for fall with your pumpkin spice recipe. Awesome! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

This is amazing! I can’t find a lot of my beloved pumpkin-scented candles or sprays -or anything- over here in the UK now that we’ve moved, and I miss it so much!

We use frankincense which blends well with a lot of oils, such as sandlewood, around winter holidays.

ooooooooooh! Thank you! I’m totally going to do this now. And in addition, you have now solved my conundrum of how to make my house smell like Christmas when December rolls around! I made a deal with my husband that we could have a fake Christmas tree provided I could burn tree-scented candled pretty much constantly. Now that I know that they’re toxic, I was lost for what to do. This is a perfect concept and I can just choose other oils! Thank you!

  16. Jackie Avatar

I was wondering,is there anyway of making this without EO? Meaning like making a tea with all those fresh ingredients?

  17. Rachel Avatar

So this same concept will work with whatever yummy-smelling oils we have on hand?

    1. Radha Avatar

I think it will for sure as long at they are complimentary. I make my own Lavender room spray which is relaxing.

Is there a shelf life for the pumpkin spice spray? Will bacteria grow in the spray bottle over time?
