Big eyes and long eyelashes are a classic feminine trait and many women have gone to great lengths (pun intended) for them. I even made my own natural eye shadow recipe to accentuate mine. Unfortunately, many treatments like eyelash extensions and growth serums can cause allergic reactions, infection, or other problems.

Never fear, there’s a natural way to encourage lash growth… all you need is a little castor oil!

Get Longer Eyelashes Naturally

Of course, there is a genetic aspect to long eyelashes, but that doesn’t mean that those without the lucky genes can’t increase their eyelash length. I have a cousin who naturally has super-long dark eyelashes that look like extensions.

My eyelashes are decently long but definitely not that dramatic. I have been experimenting with natural ways to increase my eyelash length and thickness.

There does seem to be a connection between nutrition and hair health, so if a person isn’t getting enough fat-soluble vitamins, b-vitamins, vitamin C, and collagen.

Overuse of eye products, especially long-lasting mascaras or fake lashes, can weaken lashes or lead to lash loss.

Natural Eyelash Extensions?

After publishing my homemade mascara, many people asked if there was a natural way to make fiber lash mascara or eyelash extensions. I’m yet to find a natural version of false eyelashes since most glues contain formaldehyde. Most fiber lash products also contain questionable ingredients.

What I did find, however, was a natural way to make lashes look as long as fake lashes using only natural ingredients.

This natural eyelash growth serum uses:

  • Castor oil– Natural source of omega-6 fats, proteins, and vitamins that helps encourage dramatic hair growth
  • Emu oil– “highly anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, anti-wrinkle, penetrating, a transdermal carrier, promotes skin regeneration, non-comedogenic (does not clog pores), nourishing, anti-aging and bacteriastatic.” (source)
  • Coconut oil
  • Vitamin E oil (optional)

Castor oil alone would give noticeable results, as it has been extremely helpful for lengthening and thickening my hair, but the addition of emu oil, coconut oil, and vitamin E give this serum a wider range of fatty acids and nutrients to help speed eyelash growth.

TIP: Christa of The Whole Journey recommends adding 1 drop of lavender essential oil to mascara to speed eyelash growth. I haven’t tried this yet, but it could be added to this serum for additional benefit. (Just always use caution and do your own research when using essential oils!)

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients in a small dropper bottle and swirl gently to combine.
  • To use, squeeze one drop onto your finger or a cotton swab and gently massage into lash line. I prefer to do this at night to let it work overnight before washing my face in the morning.
  • Use daily for best results.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to one year.

TIP: Also use on eyebrows to help with thinning eyebrows! This will last up to a year as long as it is kept in an air-tight container. Be careful not to add water, aloe, or other liquid ingredients that will spoil.

How do you take care of your lashes?

It’s the best mix that can be. I didn’t try to add vitamin E but I mixed those oils. Works perfectly. Just it’s not convenient for my frequent business trips and removals for work, so I have a “pocket product” as well, recently it’s Cherish Lash serum. It’s natural too as I wouldn’t buy harmful stuff. Expressive eyes and good looks are very important for any “female boss” :))

Hi, I am trying to grow my eyelashes and eyebrows thicker, am 62 and gradually have seen my eyelashes disappearing! Some of this may be because I have had adrenal fatigue/insufficiency and I know the outer third of your eyebrows thinning out is a sign of thyroid issues (low thyroid)…but some may be due to age. I guess it’s all connected!
Anyway, am going to try to do the coconut oil and castor oil concoction faithfully. My question is, I am wondering if it’s the same as using Latisse, that once you stop doing the process of applying it to your eyelashes or brows, the thickened effects you’ve achieved go away? Therefore you have to do this forever?
I definitely would if it works though! 🙂 Thanks for any replies. Love your site!

I have used coconut oil as a moisturizer on my face and woke up with puffiness on my eyelids and below my eyes. I am not sure if this an allergic reaction because it doesnt seem to have any negative effects anywhere else on my face or body.
I would rather not use the coconut oil near my eyes, is there something else to use in place of it for this recipe?

Excited to try this! Do you think it’s safe while trying to conceive, pregnant, or nursing?

I use a mixture of castor oil with just a drop or2 of rosemary EO. I have been using it for a few months now, about 3 times a week, and I can definitely see growth in my eyelashes. I don’t wear mascara, so this has been great, I can see that I actually have eyelashes!

Is this a safe brand to use for applying castor oil on my eyelashes? I may have missed it, but I can’t find on your blog if castor oil is safe to put on eyelids and around the eye area. I’ve also been hearing alot about using castor oil in place of re-wetting eye drops, and I’d love to know if you recommend this and if this same brand is good for that.

Heya! Wanting to try this out but wondering whether, with all the oils, could this give you water line pimples or blocked ducts? Has anyone had any issues with this? Love your work Wellness Mama!!!

Has anyone tried this who sleeps in their contact lenses? I’m wondering if it would create a film on them. I’m a voracious used of Rapidlash & it works like a charm, HOWEVER, be aware that they took out the REAL active ingredient in early 2014 so you have to look for older tubes. Each tube is sealed in plastic, so I’m currently am using bottles from 2011 that I got for $3. No air= no spoilage, so I feel it’s perfectly safe. Plus, I’m old enough to remember when A LOT of things didn’t have expiration dates that do now.

Why did my bottles turn solid? I made 2 bottles with castor, melted coconut oil and vitamin E. They were liquid but overnight they turned solid.

The coconut oil can solidify in cooler temps. I would try to warm the bottle up in my hands or even leave them on the window sill during a sunny day for a bit to see if that can help you use the bottles you’ve already made.

Katie, thank you for this recipe from a source I know I can trust! I’ve been using products like RapidLash and RapidBrow for about 2 years (which both worked very well for me), but started having concerns about harmful ingredients and chemicals. I am happy to have a natural, healthier alternative. I made a half-batch of this a few days ago (using castor oil, coconut oil, and emu oil, plus a dash of Vit E oil to preserve) and have been applying it nightly; I’ll post again in a few weeks with my results.

Question about EOs and this serum: although one would not be putting EOs directly “into the eyes,” there is a strong chance of some serum migrating from the lash line into the eyes once applied. I’ve read wonderful things about how Lavender and Rosemary can promote lash/eyebrow growth and I would love to add these to the serum; however, I am concerned about how these would impact overall ocular health. What happens if trace elements of these oils come in direct contact with the eye? Is it safer to skip them altogether? Naturally I want to make this serum as effective as possible while still being safe. 🙂

I have been using this recipe for 10 weeks and have seen results. The lavender oil is a nice addition if you like the scent. I apply the formula with a q-tip prior to bed to my lashes and eyebrows. If I remember to do it more often, then I do.

For me, I noticed my eyebrows filling in first. The outer edges have grown whispy as I have gotten older. For my lashes it took another month or so. While others may not notice, I can tell. In fact it has inspired me to wear mascara more often because I actually have something to put it on. Prior to this, it was pretty pitiful. Thank you Wellness Mama.
