As we approach the Christmas season (can you believe it is almost that time already?) and the madness of Black Friday (which I avoid), I’ve gotten several emails asking for ideas for natural and healthy gifts. I’ve already written about healthy gift ideas for men, but figured a post geared toward the ladies was in order.
The following are some healthy gift ideas that were top voted when I asked on Facebook (and gifts I’ve either received and love or would love to receive). Pretty much all of these ideas are practical and useful, and don’t take up extra room.
Have some other ideas? Let me know in the comments and I’ll add them!
I’ve written about Earthing before and how an earthing mat helps me sleep a lot better. The basic concept is that it electrically grounds your body to help reduce inflammation and improve sleep (and even stop snoring!). I definitely notice a difference when I travel and don’t have it.
Here is the one we use, and it comes with a book about the benefits of Earthing, and an outlet checker to check the ground of your outlet. Several people on my list are getting this one this year!
This is one of my favorite gifts of all time. Basically, it is a deep tissue massage at home, so it is a lot cheaper than regular massages in the long run. The big spikes make it great for athletes (my hubby and a lot of men) and people who get stressed out/tense easily (me). My hubby also doesn’t like taking the time to get a massage, especially since the sitting-still-and-doing-nothing for an hour really annoys him. This is the solution!
It doesn’t take up much room and it is wonderful for sore muscles! I use this regularly and it has made a big difference in my muscle tension. Here is the Rumble Roller I got and there are two different sizes and firmness levels.
Phillips Wake Light
For anyone who doesn’t have 4 built in alarm clocks (who chime “Mom, I’m hungry”), a natural wake up light can make a big difference in waking up and energy levels throughout the day. Basically, it is an alarm clock that gradually brightens with a daylight-type bulb and nature sounds instead of a blaring horn sound.
This particular one is recommended by the National Sleep Foundation and waking up gradually and naturally can have a big impact on energy levels and proper hormone production throughout the day.
If someone on your list is working on getting in shape or improving fitness, a kettlebell is a great option. Cheaper than a gym membership, much less space consuming than weights, and endlessly versatile, kettlebells are a great at-home fitness option.
I first discovered them through my brother-in-law who is a certified instructor, but I love them for their simplicity and results. According to Tim Ferriss, just 5 minutes of kettlebell swings 3 times a week can double weight loss efforts (one woman lost over 120 pounds in a year with kettlebells).
This is my favorite workout (along with kettlebells). It is no-impact and only takes 15 minutes. It has been wonderful during pregnancy and is also great for those recovering from injuries, with health troubles or just wanting to tighten up muscles (especially core muscles).
Coconut oil is one of the foods I’d take to an island if I could only bring 5 things to eat for the rest of my life. It is packed with healthy fats, immune boosting MCFAs, and lauric acid and is extremely versatile. It can be used for cooking, skin care, hair care, baby care, as a supplement, and so much more.
It may not be the most glamorous gift idea, but it will certainly be one of the most used!
Here is a list of 101 ways we use coconut oil at la casa de Wellness!
A Healthy Mouth
With the increasing rates of oral health problems, the gift of natural and chemical free oral health products can be a truly useful one. Personally, I love OraWellness Brushing blend and in combination with my homemade remineralizing toothpaste, my dentist says my teeth and gums have never been healthier.
NOTE: If you haven’t yet, sign up to receive info about the FREE Oral health Summit in January where dental experts from around the world will discuss natural ways to protect against cavities, root canals and more! Click here to get an email when the free summit is available.
A Bamboo Bottle
I searched for a healthy and chemical free water bottle for a long time. I found the bamboo bottle a year ago and finally bought it at a sale a few months ago. The hard outer shell protects the glass bottle on the inside and the top is completely leak proof, so I can keep it in my (gigantic and way too full) purse.
I’ve used stainless steel bottles in the past, and they were ok, but they didn’t work very well for really hot or really cold liquids and they were not insulated at all. I like the Bamboo Bottle because it can even be used for coffee, tea, smoothies, etc. without getting too hot or cold and without absorbing the smell at all.
Vibram Five Fingers
This is certainly not a gift for everyone, but for a health and fitness enthusiast who doesn’t mind getting weird looks at the grocery store, it is perfect. I personally wear Five Fingers all the time! They are incredibly comfortable and support natural walking and joint health. They are based on the idea that one can actually build the muscles in the feet and legs and help protect against joint problems by walking in a natural way (as one would walk barefoot).
The Komodo Sports are my favorite but these now come in all colors and styles so you can find one that fits your recipient’s personality.
Again, not a gift for everyone, but a really fun and unusual gift for an adventurous health enthusiast! Fermented foods and drinks can be very health promoting, and things like Kombucha and Water Kefir are gaining popularity (both of these can be made naturally carbonated as a healthy soda-alternative and they provide beneficial probiotics and enzymes). You can purchase water kefir grains here to make Water Kefir as well as starter cultures for kombucha.
This would definitely be a gift for someone you have a special relationship with who won’t take it the wrong way! A Squatty Potty is a special stool that stows under the toilet and lets the user sit in a more natural “squatting” position when doing his business.
I recently received one to review and as weird as it sounds, I can see the advantage to a Squatty Potty– especially for anyone struggling with constipation or hemorrhoids. As an added plus, the Squatty Potty doubles as a great stool for potty training, so it gets a lot of use at our house!
Probably not a good gift for a boss or prim-and-proper relative though!
The classic gift where once can truly find a gift for anyone! I’ve compiled a list of my favorite books here, and this page has a list of all the books I’ve reviewed in the past if you’d like specifics on each one.
I personally love ordering used books on Amazon (saves money and paper since they are re-used) but used book stores are also a great option (and I can spend hours there!).
We haven’t made the switch, but a lot of people love using a Kindle instead of regular books since it takes up so little room and literally hundreds of books can be put on it. I’m a fan of holding a real book when I’m reading, but Kindles are a popular gift this year.
