I can’t believe it is time to wrap-up the Wellness Challenge already!

We started almost 40 days ago with the basics of implementing nutrition changes, then we purged our pantries, talked about what supplements to take (even for children or when pregnant/nursing).

We talked about strength training for fitness and pelvic floor fitness for women.

We addressed the importance of optimizing stress levels and sleep, and how to use herbs from your backyard to make tea.

We even talked about oral health, salt baths, and the emotional aspects of eating!

I think the biggest change I’ve seen is that I’ve been able to all but stop my asthma medication. I’d been on rescue inhalers (4-5 puffs daily) for 17 years now and Advair 2x daily for over a year. I’m totally off the rescue inhalers and am only taking the Advair when I start to feel some inflammation, maybe 1-2x week!!! This to me is amazing. An added benefit to that is my heart palpitations have decreased 98% simply from not needing the rescue inhalers. I’m a very happy camper these days.

I have more energy for sure. Just remembering to drink my water has helped my skin. I generally just feel better.

The greatest benefit for me has been a complete and total remission of Crohn’s symptoms… almost immediately following the start of my diet changes.  I’m taking less and less medication for Fibromyalgia pain, too, but that is slower going.  Another GREAT change has been the stabilizing of my blood sugar.  I was always prone to dropping very low if I waited too long between meals.  It was a horrible feeling that had me desperately downing sodas or anything with sugar to get me by.  Symptoms of low blood sugar are what I always thought hunger felt like.  Now, I know a different kind of hunger.  One that doesn’t make me feel shaky, panicky, and lethargic with cold sweats.  It’s just an empty feeling in my stomach that I can deal with until healthy food choices are available.  Thank you SO MUCH!  Who knew that finding a recipe for homemade shampoo on Pinterest would change my life? :)

Did you lose weight? Yes, 9 lbs. and a total of 8 inches so far!

    Your skin improve? Yes

Sleep better? Yes, when the baby lets me and I can quiet all my crafting ideas. :)  I do still have trouble with Fibromyalgia pain in my feet and legs that disrupts my sleep… it usually follows a day where I overdo it a little because of feeling more energetic.

Have more energy? Definitely… I’ve been able to keep up with housework and outdoor spring projects (i.e. garden, landscaping) when before it was not possible.

    Improved digestion? YES!

Oh, Katie – I did so well at the beginning but the last couple weeks has been hard as we’ve all been sick.  So here’s my results while I was doing it…
    Did you lose weight? YES!
    Your skin improve? No
    Sleep better? yes
    Have more energy? absolutely
    Improved digestion? yes
I’ve been straddling the grains and sugar fence while we’ve been ill, but I need to jump back on full force.  I’ve gained some weight back and I feel absolutely sluggish.  I’m making your Chicken Cordon Bacon tonight with brussel sprouts, and I feel like I’m stepping back in!

I definitely slept better. Last couple weeks I have slept like a rock, not waking up in the middle of the night.

I think the best thing that happened is that my skin looks so much better.  Stopped the dairy and that did it.  I have also lost 7 lbs and feel so great.  Sleep is better and don’t get tired during the day like I used to.  Usually around 2pm I would need a nap.  This has been a lifestyle change that I am definitly going to keep.  Thank you Wellness Mama for all that you do.

  • Katie

No weight loss but definitely inches lost.  I feel great, much better sleep, mood and skin improved.  I’m just impressed and how much 40 days can do!  I’ve learned a lot and implemented so many new healthy things into my life as a result of the challenge, its been wonderful, thanks!

  • Jenn

Can’t believe I forgot this, cravings are way day; I can walk right by the bakery and not think about it too much.

  • Cathy

As someone else mentioned above, I’m using my asthma meds less.  Also have loads of energy.  I think my body may be detoxing because I’ve broken out on my face in a way that I haven’t for years, but I’m looking at that as a good thing since that means healing is going on inside.

  • Cathy

Also, my husband has lost down to a weight he hadn’t seen in 15 years, despite being military and having to watch his weight somewhat normally.

  • Sierra

In the past 4 months I have been sleeping better, getting up earlier, and suffering from less mood swings.
Since dropping my meat consumption and increasing my herbal tea consumption I have been less irritable and have had more energy! I feel great!

  • Daniel

My girlfriend and I tried to do this together, she really stuck with it. After removing gluten she noticed that an inflammation issue she used to have with her hands nearly completely went away.
She also has been a lot less irritable lately, I love it!

  • Kim J

I have lost weight, gained energy, and I have no cravings for junk. It’s amazing!

  • Kim J

Also, my husband has lost weight, and a lot of appetite.  He is hoping that after another month or two his joint pain will alleviate.

  • Kim J

And, my 3.5 year old son, who has been soo good about our nutrition, has cut out sugar, dairy, and grains, and seen an improvement in his general health.  The cold he was battling for about 2 months almost magically disappeared!

  • Smoochagator

Wow, I guess it is time to wrap up the challenge. Time flies! Over the past six weeks I’ve drastically reduced my sugar & grain consumption and boy did it make a difference! I’ve especially noticed that my energy levels are more consistent – no more falling asleep at my desk after lunch – and I have almost NO gas & bloating anymore. Added bonus: I lost 15 lbs. I’m convinced that the grain- and sugar-free lifestyle is the way to go. And this is coming from a serious breadaholic! (I guess you could say I’m in recovery…)

  • Kori

I broke my stall!!!!!! I am under 170 (6lbs under as of this writing) for the first time in 16 + years. I am sleeping better, waking better, my skin has improved, I am not less stressed, but I am managing my stress better. In general, this challenge has been a sucess.

  • Kristen

Our family made changes in our diet out of necessity.  We have a son that will continue to get  sick, and finally put it together with food.   I thought I fed our family well, but after purging the pantry realized that I was not doing as good of a job as I thought I was.  The one difference I notice the most is the fact that I have more energy.  Normally I would get a mid after lull, now I am ready to go all day long.  It is wonderful!   I have noticed an improvement in my menstrual cycle, my hair seems to grow faster and is healthier, and sugar cravings are gone.  The best thing that has come out of this is that I am learning how to cook healthier meals, learned to replace gluten,  dairy and sugar in our lives.  There are alternatives!  Thank you for all the inspirations and healthy alternatives!

HAHAHA!  I apparently did much better with the challenge than I did entering the actual contest.  :)  I stuck with it the whole time…lost weight (10lbs), lost inches (to the tune of over 10!), weight down a clothes size, made sleep a priority (at least 8 hours every night), have tons more energy, no more bloating, great skin, and I’m doing a much better job of taking care of myself!  Taking baths, reading before bed, spending time every day outside with my girlies–it has been an amazing challenge period.  Thanks for the motivation…it was awesome & the forum was great!

  • Jessicabnewton

The biggest change has been weight loss as well as mood improvement. I feel like a completely different person. Before it was very hard for me to think clearly and stay on task, and I felt unhappy(just didn’t know it at the time!)

Now I have much more energy, I’ve dropped 7.5 pounds and I feel significantly better with my moods. I’m also finding that I’ve had a much clearer mind and I’m able to complete tasks in a more timely manner and I find time to spend with my son much more easily than I did before. My life is overall less messy when it comes to meals and my mind.

    It’s great!
