Oral Health Mini-Challenge [Giveaway]

remineralizing toothpaste Oral Health Mini Challenge [Giveaway] Oral health is often overlooked when a person switches to a healthier lifestyle. I often see people who have changed their eating habits, exercise habits and sleep habits but who are still using the same chemical ridden oral health products.

The same rule applies to toothpaste and oral health products that applies to anything we put in our mouths: If you can’t pronounce the ingredients or order them individually without being a chemist…. avoid them!

I’ve mentioned before about how oral health can drastically impact the health of the body, but it seems that science is just starting to scratch the surface on this topic.

Natural Oral Health Products:

The good news is that switching to natural toothpaste and other oral health products is often easier than switching diet, exercise or (*ahem*) getting enough sleep. This week’s mini-challenge focuses on getting the bad products out of your mouth and out of your house!

Contrary to conventional wisdom, it is possible to reverse cavities and remineralize teeth, and we must start thinking of our mouths as an integral part of our bodies that need proper nourishment. It turns out that our overall health and nourishment can even effect whether or not we need braces as kids or how many cavities we get.

I’ve been making my own remineralizing toothpaste for about a year now, and been using it in conjunction with OraWellness Products. In that time, I have had no new cavities, and several areas that the dentist was waiting to fill at my next appointment weren’t there when I went back! It also used to take them a long time to scrape down my teeth at each appointment, and now it literally takes a couple of minutes at most.

I’ve also been whitening my teeth naturally, though my method sparked a lot of controversy on pinterest!

I’m happy to say that these methods work much better than the conventional methods I’d used previously, and I don’t have to worry about the toxic chemicals! (Did you know that eating a tube of fluoride toothpaste can kill a child! We don’t even keep it in the house anymore!)

The Giveaway!

I’m so excited to be able to giveaway a complete Heal Thy Mouth System from OraWellness today! I use OraWellness products personally, and love them, and I’m so glad to be able to share them with you.

The Heal Thy Mouth System is a complete method for reversing gum disease, pockets in the gums and other mouth problems. It includes their Brushing Blend, a Bass toothbrush, an irrigation system for the gums, and video and written tutorials and help. The educational materials will help you target your problem areas and get rid of the bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay. Several of my family members have had great success with this system and I’d recommend it, especially if you have gum disease or other dental problems.

You can read more about their Heal Thy Mouth system here and read about their brushing blend here.

Did both … hmmmm probably the toothpaste son got from the Orthodontist, … (Crest overnight health) , or Listerene …. otherwise I’ve been trying to switch everyone … off to make some toothpaste! ;)

  • Posy Moe

I signed up! Whether I win the give away or not, I’m definitely going to try their products. The worst I had in my house was Listerine, but it’s gone now!

Your statement that a tube of flouride toothpaste could kill a child scares me with 4 children in the house and one due to be born in July. Just the motivation I need to move on to something healthier.  Thanks.  I would love to be the winner as my teeth really suffer through each pregnancy and the hyperemesis that comes with it.  I am thrilled to see that teeth can be remineralized!!!

  • Carolyn

Added oralwellness on facebook page.  I am excited to try their product! The worst we had in our home was Crest toothpaste.  We now have a natural toothpaste without all of the “bad stuff” :)   Carolyn

  • Meaghan

Done and done! Got rid of all the yucky toothpastes but still trying to find a mouthwash for my husband who had a crown on his top four teeth due to a horrible motorcycle accident. He gets junkies under there and its hard to get them without a mouthwash!

  • Rebecca

I subscribed to their newsletter! We have a tube of regular flouride toothpaste. Ran out of our flouride free and can’t find anywhere in our small city to buy a new one. So I ordered a pack of flouride free toothpaste online and we’ve been using the “bad stuff” until then. Hopefully can throw that yucky stuff away soon.

  • Mora

Signed up for the newsletter, and probably the worst this I have is the fluoride toothpaste. Will try to get rid of it soon.

  • http://abstractadventure.blogspot.com/ Emily

Subscribed! The worst product I’ve got has to be a tube of whitening toothpaste still sitting in my cabinet. I developed some sensitivity from it so stopped, but still was keeping it “just in case.”

  • Bridget

I signed up for their email list and liked them on facebook.

The worse product in our house is definitely the teeth whitening strips!

  • Valerie B

I signed up! I’ve been making my own toothpaste for a month or so now, but we still have toothpaste in the house that contains flouride. I’ll be donating the unopened product and my husband is finishing up the last tube of Sensodyne. :)

  • http://www.loveandbacon.com loveandbacon

I’ve been on their newsletter, and they’re ‘liked’ on Facebook. The worst we have in the house is Listerine. I don’t use it, but I’m trying to convince my husband that it’s bad for his teeth so getting rid of it is a work in progress!

  • Jess

Signed up for both! I had a few terrible things including whitening mouth wash. I am terrified of the dentist so a quick cleaning is a huge motivation for me to make the switch and try this out.

  • Cathy

I’ve got Listerine, is that terrible?  Guess I should read the ingredients.  I almost never use it as mouthwash, though…we use it as a soak for our toothbrushes every few weeks to disinfect them and leaving them smelling fresh.  We current use healthier fluoride-free toothpastes from Kiss My Face.

  • Rachelgriggsthompson

Liked on Facebook. Didn’t see newsletter sign up
Thought I was using “natural” toothpaste for a long time but finally switched to a coconut oil cleaner. A suggestion from reading one of your blog posts. Working on the husband to switch:)

  • Chantel

I’m already signed up for newsletter and already liked their FB page. Thanks to you Katie, I no longer have any oral chemicals at my house. I make your remineralizing toothpaste and i bought some OraWellness brushing blend last month. My mouth has never felt better! I have tried oil pulling and gargling with hydrogen peroxide but i haven’t been good about keeping up with it. Would love the irrigation system!

  • Christine

    I signed up at Orawellness.
My husband can’t part with his Listerine and colgate toothpaste.  He buys into all the ADA hype about fluoride so it’s a difficult battle because what am I compared the mighty ADA?!  I’ve tried various store-bought ‘natural’ products, but he and the kids are not receptive.  Perhaps the homemade toothpaste will do the trick, as well as building my case against fluoride and other such chemicals and then presenting it to him in a logical manner.  Wish me good skill because luck has nothing to do with persuading him ;)

  • Joey2003_williams

Crest kids Toothpaste. Great for whitening my tile grout. It really works. Just put a little dab of white toothpaste on your dirty tile grout, scrub and it lifts the stains right off. Scary isn’t.

  • Joey2003_williams

Colgate Toothpaste. It’s a great for getting my dirty tile grout clean. It really works!

  • Anne

I signed up for the newsletter….the worst product in my house is probably a toss up between our whitening listerene and the whitening toothpaste…..gone!

  • adrienne

I signed up for the newsletter. I use Crest now and mostly because it costs under$2. I tried one of the natural toothpastes but  i’m not sure if it didn’t work or I didn’t use it long enough. I’m ready to try again.

  • http://www.facebook.com/venuslemoos3 Venus Kalami

whitening sensodyne toothpaste has to be one of the many first offenders. i’ve signed up for the newsletter and connected on facebook

  • J Magnant

I am already subscribed, as I have ordered from them.  I don’t have a facebook. I’ve been using the Oral Wellness Oil since your last posting about it.  This February was the first time ever that I had a dental cleaning in which I was not told that I had to floss more or that my brushing wasn’t good enough or any other bad news.  And all I did was brush with a few drops once a day.  I will start using it every time I brush and I will get rid of that tube we won’t name.

  • Laidydesign

Subscribed to the newsletter! Worst thing in our house was a bottle of Listerine in the boys’ bathroom – all gone now. I’ve been making our toothpaste for awhile now (peppermint clove is the current flavor). Thank you for the recipe!

  • Pat

    Subscribed!
the worst is the Crest Kids Toothpaste with sparkles. My daughter won’t part with it :-(

  • Kim J

Signed up!  The worst thing I have is a tube of gel-cam flouride that my dentist recommended to help with sensitivity.  It hurts more than anything else!  I’m getting rid of it!

  • Sarah Laughlin

I liked Oralwellness on facebook. Right now I’ve got both adult and kids Tom’s flouride free toothpaste at home but since is has SLS in it we haven’t been using it for several months. Time to throw it out!

  • http://profiles.google.com/ceciliapowers Cecilia Powers

i’ve been using your toothpaste and i love it. i am signed up for orawellness and would love to try one of their products. i use hydrogen peroxide, coconut oil (oil pulling) and the toothpaste for my teeth. now just ot convince my husband to use it too.

  • Erin

Done! probably Crest toothpaste is the worst in my house right now.

  • Nicolette

I’ve got a couple bottles of mouthwash that have seen better days!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=566555289 Brandi Dozier Leary

Signed up and “liked” them on facebook. Here’s hoping!! Worst dental product we have is the “clinical” Crest mouthwash. It’s so bad you can’t taste anything for a couple of hours. Through it out a couple days ago due to that scary effect.

  • http://impressyourkids.org lmilla

I’ve already signed up for their newsletter, so I liked them on FB.  Honestly, the worst oral health products in the house are the hubby’s.  I already use your recipe for toothpaste, and the kids are using a natural fluoride-free toothpaste, but the hubs is reluctant to change!

  • April

Signed up for the newsletter.  Tap water, can not throw it out but will search for an alternative filtration system.

  • Christina

I just ‘liked’ them on Facebook and I already receive their newsletter because we ordered some of their products after reading about them here on your site. The worst product we had in our house was typical store bought toothpaste…but not anymore! We do still have some “natural” store bought toothpaste (I think Tom’s brand?) and I realize there is probably a lot wrong with that one as well. I have your toothpaste recipe printed out and I’m going to try to make it before we run out of toothpaste again. Thanks for the helpful post and exciting give-away!

  • Jmm2858

I signed up for the newsletter.  I had some mouth rinse prescribed by my dentist for my periodontal disease. It was called chlorohexidene gluconate!!  I used it for about 2 years to no avail. Finally switched to an all natural mouthwash and all of my problems went away!  Now I am in a dilemma.  I’m afraid to throw that chemical stuff in the trash as it might contribute to toxic waste in our landfills!

  • Nicole Cone

Subscribed & liked.  We had all sorts of products like Listerine, fluoride, various whitening and sensitive teeth toothpastes.  We got rid of it all and switched to more natural toothpastes like Tom’s of Maine and Burt’s Bees.  We’ll be trying out your remineralizing toothpaste soon.

  • Deby

This is of particular interest to me, as my teeth may be my biggest health challenge!  I got the book on remineralizing your teeth, and am very encouraged that I don’t have to just live with what I’ve got and leave everything to what the dentist thinks should be done!

  • C1sarena

I am friends with Ora wellness already and recently started using their products. Would love to win

  • Nancy

I have signed up for their newsletter and hope to win!  I have very sensitive teeth (especially one that have a hot nerve), and have been fighting gum disease without dental insurance!  The worst in my house is Aquafresh for Sensitive Teeth.

  • FCSteach

Just ordered the brushing blend, I know this will work it’s just taking the time to educate myself on all this stuff with 3 children under the age of 7 and a full time job. I am grateful to Kate for helping me by taking out the hours of google searching for answers out of my week. This is how I have gotten here…….hours, and hours of personal research. It’s all been worth it but now that I am back to work after having my last baby I am finding it easy to slip into bad habits and old routines because of a lack of time. Lately I have been brushing with sensodyne instead of my usual salt toothpaste that I have been buying from Welleda. My teeth were getting too sensitive for my “healthy” toothpaste, and while I new that the sensodine wasn’t good for me I haven’t had time to figure out what to do about it! Thank you so much Katie, went and ordered the new stuff today and will get started on that as soon as I get it. I am anxious to sit and read about the rest of the things I need to do, but for now this will have to do!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001295974658 Beth Ann Silver-Villarreal

I signed up! And the worst product we have in our house is the optic white toothpaste. I feel like its tearing away my enamel. Would appreciate something healthier since I am pregnant and need to take care of my teeth!
    -B

  • GavelliNa

Used to let my kids use crest but have switched them out now. I too have had problems and am interested in knowing that teeth can be remineralized.

  • Sarah Harkins

Signed up for the newsletter. We’re getting rid of commercial toothpaste and switching to your mineralizing  toothpaste.

  • Qaya1351

I did both. Very good site by the way. Ive changed to non flouride and look for xylitol and herbs that help with gums. But my husband still got cavities (I know he probably sneaks in some bad treats every now and then). Im on a mission to find somthing that may help reverse cavities because we do want to stay away from a lot of the conventional methods. We had bad experience with a dentist not too long ago. The worse thing we had in house but happy to say did not use was a flouride rinse (very strong) provided by the dentist. we decided to simply try gargling with baking soda and a drop of tea tree and xylitol mixed in. Thank you sooo much for your site. Blessings!

  • Connie

Liked OraWellness on FB. Would love to try their products. Have tried other “natural” toothpastes in the past, most tasted pretty bad. Would love to find something good to use. Thanks for all your good information!

  • Christine

Signed up for the newsletter!  I have 2 mouthwashes, Listerine and an alcohol-free Crest, both of which are pretty gross.  I won’t miss them…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=798055827 Jennifer Hermansdorfer

Signed up for the newsletter. I would say that the pro-whitening toothpaste was the worst thing we had…It’s gone now!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Russell-Stankiewicz/100000360755923 Russell Stankiewicz

Signed up for the newsletter. Got rid of listerine and all the toothpaste in the house.

  • Jennytherkelsen

We have tried to go completely natural. We started in September. The only bad oral care product we have is our dental floss. I buy products like that in bulk when they are on sale and didn’t want it to go waste.

I am trying the activated charcoal whitening. We had some in the house for acid reflux that my fiance refuses to use so I figured why not.

  • http://theblessedcountrymom.blogspot.com Ali

I signed up for the newsletter. The worst oral care product we have is my hubby’s Colgate.  I just used up my first batch of homemade toothpaste (your recipe!) and hope to get hubby on board soon!

  • Jade

I signed up for OraWellness! I’ve been phasing out toxic products for a while now, so I can’t think of anything that has yet to be chucked!

  • Maggie

Just signed up! I think that the worst toothpaste for me was colgate and then listerine. No longer used them

  • Kristena

Signed up!!  Total mouthwash.  Just threw it away.  :)

  • http://unhydrogenated.blogspot.com/ Kristin Jones

The worst offender in my bathroom is probably my toothpaste! I don’t use much else except whitening strips on occasion, but I’m getting rid of it all! I signed up for the Ora Wellness newsletter!

  • Becca S.

Done and done! The worse thing I have is a couple sample toothpastes from our dentist. I haven’t figured out yet how to tell them I don’t use traditional toothpaste anymore (I’ve been using your remineralizing toothpaste for a few months and just started adding the brushing blend).

  • Amber

I already subscribe to their newsletter and liked them on Facebook. I’ve been making my own toothpaste for a while now, but I still have some old whitening strips around.

  • Aaldrete

I was already signed up for their newsletter, and I don’t have a facebook.  Hope I am still eligible!

Worst offender is my husband’s Sensodyne.  His dentist got him hooked on it, and I hate it.  My four kids and I all use flouride-free, natural toothpastes, and have for years.  But I just can’t get the husband switched over.

  • Bonnie

Signed up for the newsletter! The oral product we have is Arm and Hammer baking soda toothpaste, although I just bought a tube of Trader Joe’s All Natural toothpaste as a replacement. I am currently looking at other options, so this post has been most helpful. Thank you!

  • Lenka LMT

Getting rid of the kids’ fluoride toothpaste–my 6 year old no longer uses it but my older daughter needs convincing–just need to find a product she likes :)

  • Lenka LMT

Oops, forgot to mention I signed up and liked OraWellness on FB…

  • http://profiles.google.com/joyfilledfamily Lena Flores

i signed up for the orawellness email news subscription.

the kids just had a dental check-up and received their goodie pack of toothbrush and kiddie toothpaste.  they got to it before i did.  i purged what was left of their mini tubes.

sadly, we allowed my little guy to get started on “reg” toothpaste.  he is only 22 months and is already showing fluoride damage on his teeth.  it makes me wonder what other damage as been done elsewhere, where we cannot see.

no more fluoride for this family!

  • Rachel

I signed up for the newsletter. I had to have gum surgery when I was 21 and have battled all kinds of teeth issues. Thanks for sharing about OraWellness. I hope I win!! I use Sensodyne toothpaste. Is that bad?

  • Christine

Done, and done.  If genetics are any indication, I am destined for a mouthful of crowns, and I absolutely don’t want it.

  • brookiej1

Connected with OraWellness!  I have been making your recipe for mineralizing toothpaste & love it…so does my littlest girl!  My oldest & hubby are the hardest to convince.  We need to send the hubs toothpaste to the garbage–quickly!  :)  His dad & brother are both dentists, so he’s a hard sell.

  • Lacigrl

I connected with OralWellness on Facebook. Hmm, probably all the whitening stuff I have under the sink. I have particulary yellow teeth due to wearing braces that caused big gouging holes, then bad fillings put over those that turn yellow. But the whitening stuff just makes my teeth hurt! I’m going to try some natural stuff, so I’d love to win this system to try it out.

  • Sandy

Done and done…….my worst product at this moment is Crest Mouthwash.    I would sure like to win the Oral Health Care products !

  • Christa

Signed up.  My son has two cavities along the gum line in his front permanent teeth.  Need help.

  • Elsylee28

I signed on their site plus facebook. The worst product is the Crest White Strips. I just said goodbye with a smile :-) !

  • Charmaine Marie

Crest toothpaste for my 11 month old given to us by her pedatric dentist last week. I was so confused about why they gave it to us since the back says “not for children under the age of 2.” We use Spry for her teeth currently.

  • Shari U.

Already signed up for OraWellness :) I think the worst product we have is just our toothpaste. I’ve been wanting to make the remineralizing recipe you have, but haven’t done it yet. I need to buckle down and do it!!

  • Jane N.

Thanks for letting us know about oraWellness.  I subscribed!

  • Againes81

Liked them on fb, so need this for my family. The worst thing I have is a tube of stuff the dentist gave my son. We are currently taking fermented cod liver/butter oil for my son’s teeth.

  • Vickie Cannoles

I have done both :) The worst we have in our house is Colgate toothpaste. I am thakful for the giveaway :)

  • Remmygodd

Did both…worst oral health product would have to be the fluoride mouth rinse by fiance uses…

  • CeciMami

Signed up for the newsletter! The worst is fluoride toothpaste from my sons dentist…going to make that remineralizing tomorrow! :)

  • Laura

I’ve signed up. We have already removed bad toothpastes and even started making our own, but my husband still likes his mouthwash…need to find a better alternative:)

  • Suthernkiwie

Subscribed to the newsletter and liked on facebook. . . no toxic tooth products in the house, currently using coconut oil to brush my teeth! :)

  • Lynettepettibone

Done!  We totally need the Heal Thy Mouth in our house!  My hubby was just diagnosed with Periodontal disease.  The worst product we have in our house is probably the Crest samples from the dentist.  When will they figure it out?

  • Linda Goepper

I’ve been oil pulling for  few weeks and am hopeful about the results.  I got rid of the flouride toohpaste some time ago and just started using the powders.  Appreciate your info.

  • Reneegirard@hotmail.com

I love your site and am soo glad to have found it! My worst offended is my $13 toothpaste recommended to me by my dentist. It’s called boost 3000 or something like that. High fluoride which is meant to be left on teeth instead of being rinsed off. Seemed wrong even before I started reading anything natural. Throwing it away tonight! Thanks!! Me and my 5 year old daughter are in need of heal thy mouth!

  • http://www.facebook.com/amanda.millerduncan.5 Amanda Duncan

I’m new to the natural approach to living. I understand fluoride is bad. So, what can I do about water filtration? I’ve looked it up and a total new water filtration for my home is too expensive right now. Also, I saw ZERO water filter filtered out fluoride, but someone said not to use that for human consumption :/.. Very confusing.. Please help!
