Clean Out The Kitchen Contest!

junk food 300x199 Clean Out The Kitchen Contest! Day Two of the Wellness Challenge. You’ve ditched the grains and processed foods and are hopefully working on getting enough sleep and exercise.

You are well on your way to better health and more energy… but does your foe still lurk in your kitchen? If your pantry looks like this, sticking to your goals will be tough with the offending foods wooing you from your pantry!

When a craving hits during the first week (and they likely will) it will be harder to stick to your guns if chocolate chip cookies are there to console you. It’s easy to think that you will just stop buying these foods once you’ve used them up, but its a viscous cycle. You’ll have to buy more tortillas just to use up the taco mix or more bread to use the last bit of jelly.

The old saying “out of sight, out of mind” is very true here, and the transition phase will be much easier if these foods are gone completely.

This brings us to today’s contest…. Clean out the junk from your kitchen and have a chance to win healthy herbal teas and spices to take its place.

How It Works

  • Clean out your pantry, fridge, and any other place you’ve got unhealthy food hidden
  • Donate it or take it to a food pantry if you can
  • Leave a SEPARATE comment for EACH food you get rid of
  • You will get 1 entry for each junk food you remove
  • Contest ends at 11:59 Wednesday, August 3rd, so clean fast!

What Foods Count?

  • As a general rule, if it comes in a package, box or bag, it counts
  • If it contains grains, sugars, chemicals, ingredients you can’t pronounce or has a color that doesn’t exist in nature… it counts
  • If feeding it to a small animal could induce a diabetic coma… it counts
  • If it says “low-fat” or “Heart healthy whole grains” – it definitely counts
  • If it is in a can and has ingredients other than fish (tuna, sardines, etc) or vegetables- it counts
  • If it is an oil that comes from a food that does not produce an oil when squeezed (corn, soybean, canola, etc) it counts

The Prize

Besides the satisfaction of removing the temptation, each junk food you remove gets you one entry to win a gift basket full of organic herbal teas and spices to stock your new food kitchen (a $50 value!).

Contest is open to everyone, though if the winner lives outside the US, a substitute prize will be sent. Contest ends at 11:59 pm (central time) on Wednesday, August 3rd!! Winner will be chosen via Random.org and posted on the Official Wellness Challenge Page and emailed directly.

What’s the worst food you’ve got in your house right now? Throw it away and tell me in the comments below!

Was extremely happy at how LITTLE I had to get rid of! We did the original challenge and have managed to keep the house “fake food” FREE! The only things I could find to get rid of were canola oil which had been moved from the cupboard to beneath the sink to be used for cleaning the wood floors and a pint of new potatoes that came as part of our CSA share last week and already had plans to go to the in-laws today to be added to their compost! HOOOOORAY!

i’ve pretty much been good in this area, however, i have a lot of foods that i don’t like, that are only there for hubby (he is working on other goals right now and not the food ones, pick my battles, right) but i did get rid of some bread today. i have a shelf in my pantry just for canned veggies and tuna. i have my own canned tomatoes. and today when i bought ice cream (hubby), i bought a flavor that i would never ever eat. i reallly like this challenge, makes you think about whats in your house.

    Throw. The Junk. Away.

Do not donate it to a food pantry.

Do not give it to your poor neighbors down the street.

Junk is junk.  Being poor does not protect you against the effects of junk.  In fact junk is MORE damaging to a poor person because, nine times out of ten, they are already badly nourished.

If you feel that bad about the situation of the poor and undernourished, donate them some REAL food.

They get more than enough noodles and rice and crackers.  The irony being that if they really want these foods, they can easily afford them.  Why do you think they call ‘em the Ramen Noodle Days when you’re a freshman in college?
This is a topic near and dear to me.  I’ve been pregnant, broke, and a recipient of “food aid” from a group of people who were going on the South Beach Diet and wanted to be generous with their carb castoffs.  I was short on vitamin A and if you do your research you will know that carb foods increase the need for that vitamin.  My daughter was born with health problems related to vitamin A shortage and now is at increased risk for end-stage renal disease later in life.Garbage is garbage and belongs in the trash bin.  Put it there.  Poor people are not trash bins.

Hope I got that across strongly enough.  I know everyone here means well, so please DO well.  Someone someplace will surely thank you.

  • Sarahzam

I don’t have any junk to throw out, the only stuff I have in the cupboard that doesn’t suit me is bread and bisuits, bread for the kids sandwiches and hubby likes a biscuit after dinner with his tea but I don’t get tempted by these at all!

As far as out of sight- out of mind I disagree- not true! Some things can be out of site for quite a while, but they can also still be on our mind- so I disagree…And as far as all the pasta goes, why ditch it all? Most people rinse the starch and sodium out of it after it’s been cooked anyways- I sure do!

  • Meg

I clean out  my frig, freezer & pantry about once a month, to either return unopened items or give them away IF I’ve had them for to long…Always ck labels on items, plus look @ the expire date on things I want to purchase…But I refuse to get rid of the few boxes &/or bags of pasta that I have..Nothing is wrong w/ pasta if it is rinsed good in strainer w/ hot water after it’s cooked….

  • Meg

ALL the items that are shown in the pic above, I do NOT have in my pantry…To me it’s all junk!
