Discussion: Worst “Health” Food You’ve Ever Seen?

If you agreed to take on the 40-Day Challenge, chances are that your idea of “health foods” differ from mainstream society. If not, perhaps consider a second look. As Mark Twain said, “Anytime you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

Since your views on “health” foods might have changed, what are the foods that you once thought were healthy that you now won’t even touch? Perhaps it wasn’t something you used to eat, but a product that you’ve seen that made you shake your head, or *facepalm*.

Perhaps it is baked soy crisps made with “heart healthy” canola oil?  Perhaps meat free hotdogs?

Here is my example (in my defense, I didn’t buy this, it was given to me by someone who was moving!)

Let’s see… no calories,

no sugar,

no fat,

no carbohydrate,

no gluten,

no cholesterol,

and no preservatives….

What the heck is it?

A look at the label tells us there are no proteins or vitamins either:

unhealthy health foods Discussion: Worst Health Food Youve Ever Seen?

It contains some sodium (pretty sure that is supposed to be on the ban list of conventional wisdom too!), water, vinegar, indigestible fiber, chemicals and spices. Just one problem…. it isn’t food! There is virtually no nutrition to speak of.

The chemists at this company managed to come up with a product that is apparently impervious to the digestive system and just passes through untouched. I’m not brave enough to taste it, so I can’t let you know how it is, but I can’t imagine it is any good! (Certainly, I couldn’t imagine it being as good as real food salad dressings that actually have nutrients… and calories!)

To me, this salad dressing signifies the diet mentality of far too many in society today. We (society as a whole) are afraid of everything… afraid of fat, afraid of calories, afraid of salt. We are so afraid of real food, that some go so far as to turn to artificial non-foods designed to trick the taste buds into satiety without nourishing the body!

Perhaps I should create a High calorie, high fat, bacon packed, chemical free dressing and see how that one goes over icon smile Discussion: Worst Health Food Youve Ever Seen?

What kind of health foods make you roll your eyes these days? I’m enjoying hearing from you during this challenge, and can’t wait to see your answers on this one!

What is the one food that you used to eat that you wouldn’t even give to your dog now? Something that is considered “healthy” that disgusts you? Please tell me about it below!

Oh, wow – this is one topic where I have to bite my tongue ALL the time. I have friends who are really into “points” and everything else that goes along with that Nationally Known Weight Loss Company. (the double W…). So – just about any boxed, processed “healthy” food from them would be on my list. The one that REALLY gets me though is the recipe that they all pass around in various forms. A boxed cake mix, mixed with a can of diet soda, baked and then served with fat free whipped topping. It makes me cringe and almost gag just to type that. I was part of a conversation yesterday where one of them asked again for the “recipe for that healthy cake”. SERIOUSLY!

Margarine, “I can’t believe it’s not butter” and any non-dairy margarines that are sold by health food stores for those with dairy allergies. When my doctor recommended limiting dairy, an allergy-conscious friend recommended a health food store that sells non-dairy margarine. I had to respond that margarine is, hands down, worse than the miniscule inflammatory effect that butter would have. I have known for YEARS that butter is better than margarine, but I can’t seem to convince my Mom.

Ummm, everything I used to eat and feed my family. We were so SAD. I did the points for years and ate all that processed low fat ‘foods.’ I’m watching two kids over spring break. Yesterday the boy brought some “healthy” low fat pink and orange yogurt and a baggie of some sort of cereal for snack. My son ate a banana and whole milk yogurt from our local dairy. I have no problem (well, maybe a tiny one) watching my friend chug a Diet Coke and eat a burger, they’re adults, but it’s hard watching kids drink soda and eat chips. I’ve become “That Mom.” :)

Oh, also…I babysit, and my kids’ parents send their lunch with them. I’d like to add anything that these parents feed to their kids to the list of repulsive foods. On today’s menu: Mac & Cheese, veggie “straws” (a.k.a., those green and red crunchy chip-type things) and applesauce. The applesauce wouldn’t be so bad, but it’s prepackaged, individually wrapped and full of added sugar. Snack was goldfish crackers and nutter butters.

Well, before I found Sally Fallon and real food I was on a low fat low cholesterol diet suggested by my doctor. I saw a nutritionist who told me what to eat and what to avoid. I was told to look at the label for the amt of fat. 3 grams or less was good. That’s what I did. I ate Morningstar products, their fake burgers while the rest of my family ate real hamburgers. I thought I was being healthy. I have since told my mom to stay away from Morningstar. She does listen to me.

Cool Whip Free – I have a friend who swears by this stuff. She makes little dollops and freezes them for 0 point “ice cream treats”. I try really hard not to eat anything that needs an ingredient list (other than cheese), and even harder not to eat anything that I can’t pronounce the items on the ingredient list.

i am several months behind on this, but i couldn’t help but comment.  i babysit on the weekdays and have a deal with my babysat kid’s mom that i will provide lunch for her kids if she brings gluten-free snacks for all the kids to share.  it was a lot easier to just tell her we avoid grains and mostly gluten than to get into the whole primal/whole foods speech. she brings a whole lunch bag full of fruit/microwave popcorn/gluten free cereal for all the kids to share.  i’m not saying i am not grateful for her efforts, i truly am.  but i can notice a huge difference in the children’s appetites and behaviors when they’re eating these sugar-filled foods (including the fruit) vs. eating  a whole, healthy diet.  my kids act like little crack heads after they’ve eaten all that fruit and sugary (but highly processed and gluten-free! ) food.  i will stick to our protein and veggie-filled diet!

I am that person that can’t keep quiet when I see people giving their kids diet soda or diet anything!
